Can’t say for certain of course, but I recall a box of these being walked around at Long Beach a few years ago.

Why are these modern cents selling for so much, is it really the thrill of a blank label that is causing such premium?

It's an unusual item and at this point appears to be scarce. So yes the thrill is there for slab (and/or sample slab) collectors.

Is this real or is there some science manipulation behind these slabs ??

I mean those slabs should be green.

Possible overexposure to UV light that faded the text ??

Doubt that very much, I purchased the 1960-D, nothing unusual in regards to color of the label.

I never cease being amazed at what comes up on these forums.... Of course, collectors collect... and there is no limit to what may be collected, (beanie babies, belly button lint, ear wax - I know one person who saved all their finger nail clippings)....So I am not really surprised that blank label slabs are attracting some interest... the prices do raise an eyebrow though...fortunately for me, the items are not interesting...For those that are interested - go for it and have fun. Cheers, RickO

These are fun coins. I was in all three up to the 1967. I'm not surprised they got that high tho. These are neat pieces to accompany random off-sets like sample slabs etc. This as an "error", having had some printer jam a box of labels or just skip lines etc. I bet a sample exists with an off-center printing.

They must be from show circuits or PCGS events, maybe a YN wheatback deal. I'm sure more are floating around out there and it's cool to see even the different types of blank paper. Even non collectors would've walked out with one. I hope more show up just not that kind of money lol. A bunch are probably in junk boxes.

Hard to tell... first off don't have pics from 2014. Second the coins themselves aren't very distinctive. The one I track, NGC-005-4-1 is easier because the dirt patterns on G4 Liberty Nickels are pretty distinctive.

Not really. In this case the whole point is to buy an odd holder that doesn't really have an explanation and shouldn't exist.

Those of us who collect these kinds of things realize that we are in the minority. In fact we've been accused of being pretty weird. But it's okay it's our kind of weird and they know us there.

I've posted the story David Schwager put in the Sample Slab book, which is that both Customer Service and David Hall haven't any idea.

This looks like PCGS 5 according to Conder's book, so that dates it between 1995 and Oct 1998 (the first of the blue labels started in Nov 1998). Plus or minus a bit, samples were sometimes done ahead to introduce them or later to use up stock.

What makes these odd (beyond all the other odd) is the coins used. Few sample slabs have been made from random date coins, let alone handfuls of BU coins. A blank label is also pretty obvious to even minimal QC.

My personal belief is a ghost shift box that then sat around because the maker was worried it would be tied back to him/her and hit the market years later when s/he thought it would be safe.

But unless somebody comes forward and says "I worked at PCGS during and I did it", we'll never know.

Maybe someone was being trained on how to place coins, assemble the slabs, and practice using the ultrasonic welder (to join both sides).
