I Love this Altered 1914-D Lincoln

Just continuing on with the "Love" theme. I was perusing 1914-D Cents on the Bay, honing my skills on Mintmark positions and die characteristics when I spotted this old alteration.

Hundreds, if not thousands of 1944-D Cents were altered by making the 4 in the date look like a 1.

It leaves a space between the digits that is very noticeable. The V.D.B. on Lincolns shoulder is a more dead giveaway.

Is it on purpose that the area where the V.D.B. is located seems to be "shaded" in the pic?

I notified the seller. They said they would have the coin looked at.

    For those of you who are new to coin collecting, authentic 1914-D Lincoln Cents have no V.D.B. designers initials at the base of Lincolns shoulder.

    The initials were added in 1918.

    ANY 1914-D Lincoln with designer initials has been altered.

    When I was 12 or 13, it took me a good hour and a half to make one.
    Pocketknife and itty bitty screwdriver.

    Spent it probably. :D

    It looks like the photo of the obverse of the fake offered on eBay has a “convenient shadow” over where the "V.D.B." is located. It makes it harder to see it IF you really can spot from a photo like this. I need to a 10X to see it on a coin in my hand.

    Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

    I had one in my old blue book for about 50 years until I really looked at it! Fooled me as a kid and never looked at it again for decades......
