And what causes the untoned areas between the tops of the letters and the rim?

False. (And --- the coin has nothing to do with the Kolkata catholic nun Teresa Bojaxhiu.)

    Yep, AT.

Photo looks pretty juiced, along with the toning

These tone like the canadian 50c pieces. Can get pretty wild. I think NT. If it is AT it doesnt look like this seller did it looking at his other coins.

@RogerB Is your "False" in response to Asheland or the toning?

@ACop The fineness is .830 compared to Canada's .800, so that could account for similar toning.

Funky color, IMO....usually implies AT. I vote doctored.

Might be NT but I would not pay NT money for it. But the coin is pretty and would make a great gift to the Roman Catholic Church. Just have it appraised by an understanding forum member on here sympathitic with your good intentions. It might make a very good charitable contribution.

I would say AT. For $35 it doesn't matter as long as you like it.

Do the untoned areas that I mentioned in the OP mean anything as far as AT vs. NT? Do we know what causes them?

I'm also presuming that most say "AT" based on the vibrant colors. Do these colors always point towards AT? Is there anything besides the vibrancy of the color that says "AT" to you?

Thanks for all of your opinions and comments thus far. I've been doing coins for 50+ years now but still love to learn, and everyone's comments help me and others.

    bogus toning for sure

The coin is likely NT but would be called artificial by the top grading companies. That blue sometimes does occur naturally but it is more often associated with artificial toning, heat method I've heard. The blue is in the proper progression because orange comes before it and yellow comes after it. However, the companies and other people don't like when the blue is that bright. The untoned portion is called stretch toning and has to do with how the coin was minted. It's a pretty good indicator the toning is original and natural. It is very strange to see stretch toning paired with such a bright blue. I'm a bit torn. Could go either way. Very interesting piece!
