Modern commems a dying breed?

Have noticed over the last few years that modern commem sales have been hovering around 25k per issue (being generous for some). Is this program breathing its last breaths? Seems like then interest is fading.

Too many issues. Uninspiring designs. The interest probably is fading.

The Mint putatively learned this lesson in the 50s.
Then they forgot it in 1982.
There's something about golden geese (i.e., collectors). Smoe people just can't resist killing them to get at more of those golden eggs.

Will they come up with 1oz Peace gold coin to celebrate her 100th Anniversary in 2021? After all they are really good on re-living old designs.
Before they totally trash themselves at the US Mint, I'd like to see an Elvis coin in a big black velvet box. Either have Mexican Painters put custom Florescent Elvis Portraits on them or have each buyer arrange for their own "Art" to be done.
It would be the tackiest hit in History.

Not to mention that their website was a joke. They lost a customer forever and gained a critic.

Most Modern Comms just worth their silver content
The designs are actually inspiring in some respect. They inspired me to collect the classics, instead.

And their gold content, which why I've made profits from them, at least on paper. I bought a lot of the gold commemoratives in the secondary market when gold was well under $500 an ounce.
They did the "beanie baby" thing, just like modern baseball cards. Waaaay to many issues, and may uninspiring clip art designs.
I personally think that most of the "pre-dirty thirties" classic silver commem designs are nice, so I stop at the 1928 Hawaiian and forget most of the rest. There are only a few after that that I like, but not enough to make a rational collection.
Of all the modern stuff, I actually find some of the modern $5 gold designs interesting and I have been buying them at around melt when I want to buy gold.

Moderns won't die until the flippers stop creating false demand. They could sell thousands of new commems if they just limit the mintage to 1000. Maybe personalize them so you can get your own commem.

Ya’ll know I like moderns, so I’m not just being contrarian. The new key is the Boy’s Town $1, for proof and Unc. The BU coin only sold 12,525 coins and actually does command a premium aftermarket, fetching around $95-105 a coin raw.
I’ve seen way worse designs than this. The empty space on the obverse is welcome in a series known for over cluttered designs.
The reverse— well, it’s a big tree. It looks good.
Wonder if I could trade a Boys Town $1 BU for a National Community Service $1 BU ? Back in 1996-1997 I volunteered at my local Hospital because I was laid off from my job.
I wasn't into Coins st the time but that NCS $1 would mean a lot to me.
The mint has done well sticking to two programs a year, so at least we won't see anything as overwhelming as the 1995-6 Atlanta Olympics (or 1936, for that matter). Still, while I think the artistic merit has improved since the 1990's, my interest in the subjects of recent issues has been hit and miss. It's hard to take on a 30+ year collection when only specific years are of interest.

I don't know about the rest of you, but I'm waiting with baited breath for later this year when the U.S. Mint releases the palladium $2.50 coin commemorating the 84th anniversary of the first black woman to shave a cat while simultaneously showering in downtown Davenport, Iowa. I hear they are limiting the mintage to 18,500, so I am PUMPED!!!!
There is a market for them but saturated with sellers - higher silver prices would lift them up.
The original program was frought with abuses as well— the Cincinnati half comes to mind. Stephen Foster probably never even stepped foot in the city.
They need to make exciting issues like this one.

i gravitate towards the military themed modern commems. i usually like the designs and we have so much to be thankful because of our military. we got the medal of honor commem, the star spangled banner, five generals,...sorry if i can't remember the years of issue off hand. a lot of the recent issues from the past few years i have passed on. thanks rln
