Finally Completed My Liberty Nickels!

On 4/29/2012, I started my mint state Liberty nickel collection. My goal was obviously mint state and focus on strike. Today, I can finally call it completed with the winning bid on this coin.

Surprisingly, the white whale of the collection, was the 1886. Not necessarily due to cost, but finding one with a strong enough strike. While this one may be a few kernels short on the reverse, the obverse was strong enough to make it into my collection.

I dont have images of all my coins, but I do have several. Thanks to everyone who helped me complete it!

    I remember when I completed my Liberty Nickel set years ago...a great feeling indeed! I don’t recall which coin was last in my set, but I must say you picked a very nice 1886 to complete your set.

    You definitely have an eye for quality. And, I’m glad I was able to contribute to your amazing set!

    My first US coins I started to collect when I was a kid, here in Toronto Ontario (back in the 60's) was Barber dimes and Liberty nickels.

    Of course they were in worn circulated condition, but even today, I've always wanted a high grade collection of Liberty nickels.

    Congratulations on completing your set! I know how good that feels.

    I am having a similar problem with a “white whale” in my Classic Head gold set although my “whale” is not as obvious. The 1885, 1886 and 1912-S have all be long recognized as the keys to the Liberty Nickel set. The 1885 has the biggest reputation.

    My “white whale” is the 1838-P quarter eagle. It’s supposed to somewhat harder to find, but not impossible. I have seen one coin that worked for me in the grade assigned over the past year. I could have the 1838-C many times over. I’ve one of those for many years.

    Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?
