Clad Ike Dollars and a PL designation

for commercial issues... Will that designation ever be adopted at PCGS?
Seems to be a reasonable question. I have two 1976-D Type II Ikes that I thought were worthy that graded at PCGS but apparently the designation does not exist. I found a 1976-D Type I that has amazing PL surfaces... Surfaces I just have never seen on an Ike. Is asking about this at PCGS or NGC a lost cause?

PCGS won't give ikes PL designation. NGC has before but I don't think they will any longer although I could be wrong. And unless soemthiing has changed with ANACS they will gice it to ikes if they warrant it and they will also give only one side the designation if it's a single side PL.
AFWIW i have seen an NGC PL, an ANACS PL & an ANACS Obv PL in holders plus 2 others that were dead nuts PL's but raw... ALL were 76-D

I think that PCGS does not give out PL to anything but Morgan Dollars.

By my definitions the '76-D type I Ike is pretty common in PL with an incidence of about .5%
No doubt time has taken a heavy toll on them but the services use pretty strict standards for the definition.
The nicest thing about PL Ikes is they have a stronger tendency to be Gems than other denominations. It's not unusual for PL quarters to be all chewed up.
NGC will designate all regular issues as PL if warranted. It is very inconsistent and stingy though. I think modern ANACS and ICG do too.
I had a full PL 76d ike I sent to NGC and they gave it a straight 65. I was going to send it to ANACS but it was so PL that I was given an offer of hundreds of dollars on it as it was in the 65 NGC plastic and the new buyer would take the gamble with ANACS. I took the offer as you just never know what any service will do and I really didn't want to get into the whole submitting half a dozen times situation with it.

OK... that is a new one for me.... As for PL Ikes... I have seen a few, but not in slabs.... almost purchased one, it was so nice... but it was in an antique shop and they had it priced as if it were gold with diamond eyes.....Cheers, RickO

We used to use the gorilla dust comment all the time when negotiating. Here is a good definition the way we used it, but I always thought of it as a smoke screen you can't quite see thru but you have to go thru the process before something could happen....

I wouldn't send it in without a soak in 91% alcohol.

Reverse does not.
OK ChrisH821 Here is a few more shots.I just noticed some mint frost on this.I wonder if these PL's were struck on Proof Planchets.I read somewhere that SF mint did send unused planchets to both Philly and Denver years 73-78.Can anyone confirm that ? cladking how about an Acetone soak ?
Acetone is fine.
There's a little mint set PVC haze and they sometimes bodybag them for it.
You don't want that palm print to show up either.
Be sure to pat dry very softly with cotton or similar.

From PCGS :The most interesting bicentennial Ike dollar variety that I've have examined is a silver-clad example of the 1976-D that was found in a bag in Michigan. This was undoubtedly struck in error on a wayward silver blank sent to Denver by San Francisco

Seems there is acknowleged evidence which supports the validity of the question and the suggestion of a PL designation is worthy of the most serious consideration.
There are some amazing PL 1970-D Kennedy halfs.. Sort of begs the question if impert planchets from SF made their way to Denver which could possibly account for these.

As for the 1973-D pictured, it looks terrific worthy of some consideration of PL surfaces.
I am not sure why the designation should even be a question at PCGS... NGC and ICG seem to acknowledge that commercial Ikes are worthy of a PL designation exist.

coinkat if SF sent less than perfect IKE proof planchets to Denver,stands to reason they might do the same on other denominations as well.
