A little excitement.....

for me. I usually check my schools money box in our office every couple of weeks and every once in a while I will find something. I usually find wheat pennies. I did find a Buffalo Nickel once.
Today though I stuck silver and found a 1935 Quarter. I know to most it is not a huge deal but is my first and my kid's and I's first in our collection. So I was excited and my kids will be too.

Well, to me it is! Silver in the wild is always welcome and usually is the highlight of the day if not the week.

It's always great fun to find "antique" pieces.

When I was a kid, my dad used to bring home rolls of coins from the bank, and it was not unusual to find Barbers and seated coins.

Not only is it silver, it is also 83 years old. If I think back to 1961, when I first started collecting. I would have to have found a coin from the late 1870's to match that feat. I never did.

    All glory is fleeting.

Anytime that you can find an 83 year old coin in your change it is amazing

The quarter's probably older than the school building.

Well, maybe not a "HUGE" deal, but nevertheless, it is good and things like this is what makes coin collecting fun. Guys who have collected for 50-60 years love finds like this. I think veteran collectors cherish finds like yours just as much as coins they spend thousands of dollars for. It reminds them of their childhood and how they go started. I'll give you an example.....

Just this week I went to the bank to put some legal documents in a safe deposit box. In that box, there were 63 Capped Bust Half dollars. The majority of them were beautiful and if I had the chance to buy them again I would. It was great looking at them. The thing is......I don't remember buying or owning many of them. I spent enough money on those coins to buy a house. And I live in Southern California where houses aren't cheap. But.....and here comes the BIG BUT.....I have a 1943 Washington quarter, a Standing Liberty quarter, and a 1910 Penney, all of which I received in change over the last TEN years. I remember those coins. Just like a few pennies I found as a kid. I love them. I don't forget them and I never will. Coins like that put it all in focus. No......that quarter that you found is special. It's what coin collecting is all about. IT'S A START!

I love stories like this. Congrats! Super fun. I’ve been collection for 32 years and would still get excited about a silver quarter in change.

I don't recall ever finding a quarter dating before 1950 in change.
    Great find.

Great find.... I get really excited when I find silver in change.... makes my day for sure. It has been mostly dimes the last few years, but one '41 Walker when roll searching. And one '64 quarter in a coinstar reject bin. I remember each one.... Keep having fun with your son... Cheers, RickO

It is really nice to find or get something unusual in change. About a year and a half ago, I received a 1953 S Lincoln in change. It would grade MS 65 RD. Made my week.

Thank you for all the comments and stories I appreciate them. They are great to read and encouraging.
It was definitely a thrill to find this in the wild and my boys really liked it.
We did compare it to a quarter from today to see the differences. They pointed out the edge around the rim being a different color. Then I pointed out the difference in sounds that the both make when flipped or dropped on the ground. It was a good time.
I collect older Redline Hot Wheels from the 60's and 70's and normally when I go to flea markets or antique stores I dig in places very seldom looked and can occasionally find what I am looking for. If I can find something in the wild it is a real thrill. Just like finding this quarter it was a real thrill for me and I bet I have probably looked at it about 100 times or more. Now it is safely nestled in the ever growing collection that we have.
