I wouldn't think the planchet issue would impact the grade at all. Having said that, i am not sure it will straight-grade. Though I am not expert on copper color, the overall tone, especially in the hair beads, makes it looks like it may have been re-colored. Plus, something is going on at stars 9-10. Copper guys put lots of stuff on a lot of their coins, including olive oil and blue Ribbon, so maybe it is fine. Reverse looks really nice and RB. If it straight grades, it will be a high grade, and 65B or better. How is that for a wishy-washy opinion? Would like to see that coin in hand.

I'm also a little skeptical of the pinkish color on some of the highpoints.
I own, and have examined, a fair number of MS large cents, and this one just doesn't look right,
but it could well be market acceptable and straight graded just fine.

Not sure about the planchet defect's affect on the grade. I think on some buffalo nickels, where planchet defects are common, they get genny'd. I own a '43 petite head in an old rattler holder with similar planchet defect on the reverse, and it graded 63, but have had a number of people tell me the coin should easily be in 4 holder. Not sure if that defect held back the grade, or if they were just very conservative on it.

Nah, plus it looks like it may be a strike thru.

Nice pick up, I like it

Hmmmm? I am tending toward the "recolored" opinion. The flaw is a negative though it does not scream out at the viewer.

If the colors in the photo are accurate, I think that the coin has been cleaned and re-colored. It's a shame because the piece appears to have Mint State detail otherwise.

As for the depression on the reverse, I have seen that on a number of large cents from the 1850s, and always in the same general area below "CENT." I not sure what causes it, but unless the coin is really high grade, I don't see it as a major problem.

Here is a fairly high grade large cent from the era that might give you a frame of reference as to the color.

I"d guess details but for the burnished look.
The planchet won't hurt the grade though.

Not being a expert... I would guess details?.. It will be interesting to find out what the grade is.

MS63BN... I can't tell if those are spots, or staining. Without those issues, then it could possibly go higher.

The color looks better on the True View. The defect on the reverse is a low spot likely caused by grease or debris on the die. It is commonly seen on Late Date Large cents. If it straight graded, I am guessing 65 BN.

It does look much better in the True View. 64 Brown would be my guess based on the True View photo.

58 to 63. reverse doesn't bother me but the color is questionable. Has been "played" with.

It sure is attractive no matter what the grade. But to answer your question I do believe it will.

MS coin worthy of a 63. Coin looks enhanced based on the bold lustre. Possible details grade even though I think straight grade would be my call. Could be a strike thru on the reverse. I would not net grade or reduce the grade for that. Not sure the copper experts would agree with my thoughts

The bun is blue on just the beads that seems unlikely to happen but I guess it did here. Nice looking coin but agree about the color but I still like it.

No, I don't think the planchet flaw held it back.

Nice cent... I agree with the 64 grade....The surface does look as if it has had some treatment... not sure what though, have not worked much with copper. Cheers, RickO

If you just bought this and have a return option send this back as the surfaces are far from original. Although it looks dipped and recolored it might have been a chemical conservation to rapidly remove areas of verdigris. Copper like this if held long term will continue to get more funky then re-skin.

Nice coin. The issue on the back is a non-issue. A good coin for the 64BN grade, I think, and I am not as concerned with the color as some who have responded to this thread.

I like the coin, I'd say 64 BN
