    Donato; @divecchia To me it looks like there might be PVC on the coin (7 and 8 o'clock on obverse - I would try an acetone bath, if it comes off its PVC.

    I too have one of these, no photo, but this thread has inspired me to see if I can take one...

    No, they don't because all they will do is hide in a safe somewhere, where no one can see it.

    Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

    These are very expensive but the Russians have managed to make counterfeits of them. I bought a set of eight coins six months or so ago.

    So how does anyone know whether the nickel is decades old (true hobo nickels in my book) or something carved in the last decade (neat but not the same)?

    Good question. Are these always made from Buffalo nickels?

    Most but not all-I've seen Lincolns, Liberty 5c, Jeffersons, Washingtons, and a few halves.

    MAN! Iron Tail looks real good in all those disguises. He probably could have eluded everyone if he wanted too.

    I'm totally amazed at the super artistry being exhibited on those nickels.

    I have always wanted an old original... but they are scarce and expensive. That being said, many of the moderns are awesome works of art.... and treasures in their own right... Cheers, RickO

    I did. It concerns the abraded dies (2 feather, 3 1/2 legged, and other abraded die varieties) of the Buffalo nickel series and a comprehensive section on the strike and historic info on these coins. A few of the members here have purchased it.

    It comes in a full 250 page edition; as the first section on the varieties only; as the second section on strike only; and complete on a memory card. I need to get more printed but there's on volume on the strike and history of the series on ebay.

    Good question @RogerB to verify you have an original vs a new one can be tough if someone is trying to pass on a coin as old when it is not. First thing to do is get the artist name. If they don’t know and your going to buy, pay for the artwork not the coin. I am a member of the OHNS and if you want an original stick to graded. Or send it to the society to verify. They are far cheaper then the big guys and can tell you if it’s authentic.
