In thinking about this further, it's probably just one step closer for them to be able to accept 'cryptos' as payment. You know ?

It's rather ironic. They spun off PayPal and now they are recreating it. Granted, it was good for PayPal because it allowed them to grow. But apparently eBay missed them. LOL

Probably, and another step closer to them being able to keep us from finding out info on our buyers so we can't go off of ebay for transactions.

If memory serves, at the split Ebay and paypal agreed to stay conjoined for a time. Guess that time is up.

They aren't exactly banned, just actively discouraged. I still have customers who insist on sending checks or money orders which I feel obliged to accept, although I'd prefer PayPal.

Sounds nice, but I doubt it is for the consumers. Reminds me of how after deregulation of power suppliers, my sister was duped into signing up for a delivery option that ended up costing her 12 cents/KW, it took a lot of work to get it cancelled and refunded.

The fee structure for sales is supposedly going to improve with the change. eBay has been losing a lot of business due to high seller fees. The change is supposed to encourage sellers to come back to or stay on the platform.

This is 100% correct. It would be daft to think Ebay doesn't know how much money off ebay sales cost them. They've gotten much more aggressive in chasing down people (sellers) who make attempts to conduct sales outside of their platform.

By acting as the middleman for payments, sellers will never see a buyer's email address or phone number. Just an address to ship to.

You actually are banned from accepting them. A buyer messaged me asking if I would accept check and I said sure. I was suspended by eBay for one week and told if I do it again I'd be permanently banned. I told them that was a little over-the-top, given I wasn't even trying to sell off of eBay (they stated the policy is to prevent off eBay sales).

Not sure how this will shake out, but Paypal knocked out my grandfathered 2.2% and raised it to 2.9 when they spun off from Ebay.

Good to see the PP shareholders nervous on Thursday morning.

I'm not so sure. You can't easily remove a commonly used payment option without consequences. If eBay's new payment plan ends up being 95% of the way people pay on eBay, then they could. But it's like trying to refuse Visa. You can do it, but you lose customers.

Maybe. But 3% PayPal fee is much smaller than the eBay fee. eBay could cut their fee with just the stroke of a pen. Now, if eBay gets the 2% from their new payment, maybe they would offset their other fees - but I wouldn't count on it.

eBay fees are still the cheapest way to sell anything other than a garage sale.

small sellers will refuse to collect sales tax from 2000 random jurisdictions so maybe ebay thinks they are going to be forced to and are putting a framework in place to do so.

I couldn't agree more. Not being able to accept checks further cut into every dealer's profit margin. That is one thing that spurred me to develop my own website. My site, my rules. Kinda like here. Of course I get about 3 eyeballs a month, but a Pyrrhic victory is better than no victory at all, right?

maybe. But if they just added it to the invoices, PayPal could still process the payments as they do now, couldn't they?

Wow... the systemic evolution continues.... Since I was around for the beginning of ebay, I find it interesting to watch the changes.... It really will not affect me, since I do not sell.... and likely will stick with CC via PayPal for purchases. However, there must be a financial benefit to ebay or it would not be happening. Bloomberg said Ayden accepts 150 different currencies at lower fee. I am nervous for granting an "international" company access to my financial informations. Paypal will continue as our 2nd option until their contract ends 2023; then we will have no choice. I think PCGS should create a web commerce place just for this hobby

The ebay announcement message is just a lot of meaningless language that sounds important but I can not make any sense out of it. But whenever anything is announced as somehow being for 'my' benefit, I wince since I sense that is not really the truth. Guess we will find out more later. Meanwhile time goes on and things change....

They are European. By the way, some people had been pushing for PayPal to buy Ayden.

If you use a credit card, it's the credit card company that has your back, not PayPal. PayPal won't even intervene once the credit card company is involved.

I was talking about PayPal covering the seller. Yes, PayPal covers the seller even with a CC Chargeback.

Costs me more like 9 or 10%. I'm happy to pay it. If you are an amateur seller, I understand. But from a business standpoint, it is very cheap especially for the eyeballs. Stacks or Heritage would cost you 20 and the seller 10 for a 30% bite. Great collections is 12.5% buyer and ???% seller for another 20%+ bite. Local auction houses tend to be in the 20-30% bite. A B&M establishment has zero marginal costs but high fixed costs. A private website has zero eyeballs without significant investment in advertising, etc. and has maintenance costs as well.

eBay gives you a lot more than most people want to acknowledge for a fairly reasonable price.
