Is there a reason on why NOT to have (Secure Plus) Gold Shield services requested?

There are several reasons as to the reasoning in putting forth a little extra for the Gold Shield (A.K.A. Secure Plus);

Gold Shield Means Added Security
Adding Gold Shield to your PCGS submission provides you with:
•Enhanced Security Label with PCGS Gold Shield icon & hologram
•More likely recovery if your coin is lost or stolen
•Digital imagery for visual confirmation in PCGS Cert Verification
•PCGS Guarantee of Grade & Authenticity

But...are there reasons as to NOT putting forth the extra to have it accomplished...other than the extra time required outside normal turnaround time? Just wondering while my latest order goes through the gauntlet of "in process" (Your submission is currently being processed).

If you are paying extra for the retro labels I wouldn't want the secure shield on them, it kind of ruins the point in my opinion.

This question has nothing to do with retro labels...not that I would pay for them anyway.

Yes it does, I am saying if I paid for a retro label I wouldn't want them to put the gold shield on it.

OK. what exactly are you getting beyond what is ordinarily part of authentication, and what is the additional charge?

Yes I think they grade tougher with the shield

The coin gets a 2(?)-D scan which is archived, and the scan is checked against archived scans for the denom/type/date/mintmark.
So it can reliably detect if the coin matches one previously scanned.

This would be more effective if all coins were scanned by default. Otherwise thieves can just send in stolen coins to the non-Secure tier.

Huh? If there is a standard, then it must be identical whether there's a shield or anything else on the package. Sorry to be so dense --- but the coin is the same so the 'grade' should be the same. Someone smart please explain this to me --- or maybe not. Might be better if I know less, not more.... ;)

I have heard that trying to crack out and regrade a secure plus coin will 99/100 time yield the same grade, since it is in the database. I’ve had national dealers pass on secure plus coins that even they think are undergraded for this reason. Maybe that’s good, maybe it’s bad. Dunno.

I wouldn't do it for coins with low values, like under $500. Not worth the extra cost to me, but that's just me. The value of the coin would be the determining factor.

That would imply that they're already scanning every single coin that comes in, regardless of the Gold Shield service. As far as I'm aware, that service is only for coins that have been reported as stolen.

Maybe they are. It wouldn't surprise me if they are.

I'm thinking that this service includes the above mentioned digital mapping, the sniffer and a TrueView image. I think some may opt out of the sniffer.

I would only pay extra for Gold Shield if the marked the scan showing the problem areas that caused a lower grade than 70.

I have no first hand experience with these things, but assuming there is an extra charge then that is one big reason to maybe no do it. Depends on the situation.

Also, based on the above responses there are definitely some questions that complicate the issue a bit.

    Not too bad, then.

I could see a large volume dealer sending in hundreds or thousands of moderns wanting to trim costs, but for the average collector sending in a special coin that is not so much as to make it excessive.

You have no choice but to go Gold Shield when you send in Express, which I do not like by the way. I also wonder about your grade being locked in based on the first time it is scanned.

As far as grades being tighter, we will see, since I have an Express order in right now. I don't think they can get any worse than they have been.

Based on my experience, I've had several coins upgrade on the 2nd attempt using the secure service.
Coins were sent in the previous secure holder as a re-grade. The first attempt on these coins was submitting the coin in a non secure holder as a re-grade using the secure service. The majority of the upgrades occurred on the first attempt and some also upgraded on both attempts. ie. a plus on the first attempt and then to the next grade up on the second attempt.

I have wondered if they are the toughest now on raw submissions, which would lead to more future regrade submissions where they would have more grading events to determine if the coin merits a bump in grade.

If you submit in the old holder for re-grade, they not only have the current graders opinion, but also the previous grades associated with the submitted cert# or the whole chain of previous submissions so as to determine if you get the bump in grade.

I use that service for the Trueview and for toned coins. I welcome the extra scrutiny on toners.

If you opt for regular service and want a TrueView, it will cost $12 extra

The Gold Shield service is $5 more than regular service and a TrueView is included.

I have 3 coins in PCGS and I requested both the Gold Shield and True View service. This will be my first time doing this and I am excited even though its only been less than 1 week. I don't know how long it will take but I will be patient and I do believe it will be worth the wait. But it will be tough I will have to work hard and stay busy in the mean time. I feel for you oih82w8!

Just as a heads up, the Gold Shield service includes TrueView for free; you don't need to pay for it separately. It wasn't clear from your post if you were aware of that or not, but I figured I'd let you know just in case you weren't.

I find it interesting that a scan now records coins sent in under this process... moving closer to computer grading....still a long ways to go, but progress is being made. ;) Cheers, RickO

Pandavab thank you for that information I did not know that but I guess when they go to add it all up since its on my credit card they will figure that in. I did check the true view and added the monies for it on the total. But no I did not know but I do now thank you for that.
