That appears to be a styrofoam ring around the coin.
Rim looks typical. It looks like a white ring that is part of the holder.

I LOVE old coins.
I like it...with moderns the holder is just dressing anyway so the more unique the better in my book

No reason to feel silly. Asking questions is a great way to learn things.@Paradisefound, when I joined this forum I didn't even know what the red book was, and I may not have even known what the mint marks stood for, and I had never even seen an image of a gold coin.
