I for one thoroughly enjoy reading Laura's market reports. Knowing her a little probably changes my interpretation of them to some degree, but I hope they never change. Boring and mundane they are certainly not, just like her posts here used to be.
Reading over some of the old pm's from her, there is no question that she really does care about our hobby, even if she often comes across as the proverbial bull in a china shop.

There are many people including myself that are happy and excited to buy the dreck she speaks of. Look, "dreck" means "rubbish". If the intent is to separate overgraded or problem coins into another class, then I would suggest simply saying "overgraded or problem coins" . Dreck is to eye appeal/Quality as
Widget is to population.
Its very simple: A very low end/unappealing coin in any holder is considered dreck. If it looks nice and is overgraded that is not necessarily dreck-that is just overgraded.
If you have an accurately graded ms65 saint that has putty all over it- that is unappealing and is dreck in whatever holder its in. Doesnt matter if its an ms63,ms64,ms65 or ms66. That coin is dreck. Same with a dark lifeless pr66 barber quarter. If its in a pr63,pr64,pr65,pr66,pr67 it will always be "dreck". Just depends on whether its undergraded, accurately graded, or overgraded dreck. Such coins for example will never sticker at cac as they look because the eye appeal is not there.
Widget is basically anything that is relatively available with little effort and searching on a given day.
For example White ms65, ms66, ms67 and of course lower- morgan dollars are all widgets. They are a dime a dozen and can be found with little effort. Ms68's are a little tougher but still can be found with not too much effort and therefor can be considered a widget as well. What would make any of these coins not a widget is having something special about them. Brilliant PL fields or super eye appeal for the grade. Maybe some color or super fresh/frosty makes it not a widget. Even CAC for grades up to and possibly including ms68 can be considered a widget as the population is just so large.
Same can be said for 1907 $20 high reliefs. Most are just widgets as well. With little searching they can be found and they trade on a very consistent basis. What would make one not a widget is the same as above. Extra eye appeal and superior for the grade (cac quality in this case) would not make it a widget as that is something special for this coin and is not something that is readily available in large quantities.
The above are just examples but the idea exists for almost all series across many grades

Legend customers are just as susceptible to buying dreck as anyone else. She wants to keep them out of low end for the grade , low eye appeal coins. That's her message. Dreck comes in all shapes, sizes and price points. I think a lot folks automatically associate dreck with lower priced items. That couldn't be further from the truth.
She has scolded me a couple of times
mark
I want to emphasize Mark's point. I have seen plenty of absolutely hideous AU 58 Bust Dollars, and dipped out / lifeless Trade Dollars in MS 65 and a few five figure Seated Dollars where I wondered how the **** did that coin get in that holder.
The thing is, Laura doesn't often deal in attractive, inexpensive coins that are more suitable for most collectors. I guarantee you she would not call an attractively toned, all there for the grade, 43 D Mercury Dime in MS 66 dreck. She'd tell you something to the effect of "nice coin, but not my market."
The rest of what she does is marketing.

I understand what Laura is trying to say. Years ago I would read her reports and compare them to my collecting habits and believe she was lecturing me. Today, I understand we're in two different investment vehicles. Laura seems to cater to a coin collecting clientele who have the money and will pay the dollars to own the "one of a kind coin". At times I believe her clientele will buy anything as long as they are buying the best. With the inequality of assets/income in this country, her business is greatly benefiting from excessive loose money. I believe that's the business she's in and I'm jealous.
On the other hand, I'm in the dreck investment business. I have been buying dreck for over 20 years. I started buying dreck in the high $200's in the late 90's. Bought more in the high 300's / low 400's. $600's. $800-900's.
and bought all the way up to about $1500. I probably average a cost of $700 so at $1320 I'm slightly ahead.
Should I have bought that one /two spectacular coins and participated in the collectible surge? In retrospect, absolutely. What about my current holdings of dreck? They allow me to sleep at night. Unless they suddenly become really valuable?
I’ve bought just a couple of coins from them over the years...both in the 1k range with the added descriptive note: “This Coin Is Posted At Our Best Price” — of course they offer far, far fewer coins in this range (admittedly widgets for them), but they are usually gorgeous widgets nonetheless.
I love browsing their website inventory. So I could care less if Laura uses poor grammar or others feel like they’re elitist. Who cares? They feed a high end niche — for the health of the hobby, that is just as important as those feeding the circulated type album fillers.
It's a little ironic the person catering to high end clientele seems to spell at the third grade level, just goes to show if you can grade how far you can go in this business.
I have looked at Legend's inventory and found that their pricing is consistent with the same coins being sold by other dealers when a direct comparison was available. I have not purchased from them yet, but that has been a function of not having the cash when they had items I wanted and vice versa.
From what I know, Legend is a successful business. I imagine it would be even more successful if Laura made fewer off putting remarks about certain individuals and businesses. I am certain that she is aware of this fact. So she has made a choice to pay a certain price for being true to herself. I know I have made this decision in my life and felt it was justified. I am sure everyone else on the board has as well. We admire those who make this decision when their behavior is in our wheelhouse, and scorn them when it falls outside.
I can understand people not doing business with Legend because of Laura, and I can understand those who let many of these things roll off their shoulders. The free market is the ultimate arbiter of what works and doesn't. Laura is going to be who she is, so you be who you want to be, act accordingly, and focus on enjoying the hobby in which you spend so much time and money participating.
Having been around here on these boards for a while I realize a few things with Laura.
She likes to push buttons. Mission accomplished.
She likes to stir up emotions. Mission accomplished.
And she likes to criticize others collecting habits. Mission accomplished.
After reading her trip reports it seems to me they are trying to sell LOUIS XIII Cognac to a Miller Lite crowd. But, dealers like this are great tables to visit to see some really rare stuff and if you want some elbow room.

I like her plain-spoken style. It feels honest. It's possible that some of her clientele share that feeling, so counterintuitively, her unpolished grammar might actually help her business. The substance of what she writes about is interesting. I enjoy reading her perspectives about the coin business.
Laura is passionate about the material she sells, enthusiastic about the market, and proud of her impressive inventory. She knows her customers well and works the auctions. Much can be learned from her blog.
In reality it all adds up wher 99c or 99k. A sale is a sale whether $20 or $20,000.
At a recent show a young lady showed me her collection she was very proud of material in the $2 range. I complimented her on our her selection and eye for grading and gave her a few pieces out of my raw coin box in the $3-$7 range. She and her parents were very delighted.
Please do not insult people their material is dreck. MS 66 Dollars are widgets especially an 82-CC lol? Most collectors coming in the shows these days probavly plan to spend no more than $300. This is just as much the coin market as the $20k material.

Hey, im not the first to call her stuff overpriced and im not the last. Im all for capitalist markets. If you can get it great, I would overpay for some coins too. But dont sit on your high throne and call everyone else's hard earned money and enjoyment dreck EVERY BLOG for 10+ years now. We get it. Let th peasants enjoy their potatoes. She makes no extra money by talking down about others. I dont get it.
It feels like this dreck issue is personal for some people, I wonder why...
Latin American Collection
I have one available right now for 1200. Must be a great bargain. Let me know if I should send you my paypal info.
"Seu cabra da peste,
"Sou Mangueira......."
It would not be near as great a bargain as the $750 example you cited.
So basically, Acop is charging nearly double what he asserted it was worth.
Glass houses...
Oh yeah, and with no pics/images either from Acop.

Wonder if it’s CAC...
I got it! Tradedollarnut is really Laura!!!
It's not. That's why im charging a premium. Fresh coin never been to cac. Think of the upside.
!
I do not think she has or will ever change her style, she seems successful
I don't know about that. She stopped posting here when things got out of hand, so she's capable of some amount of change, right?

Having been around here on these boards for a while I realize a few things with Laura.
She likes to push buttons. Mission accomplished.
She likes to stir up emotions. Mission accomplished.
And she likes to criticize others collecting habits. Mission accomplished.
After reading her trip reports it seems to me they are trying to sell LOUIS XIII Cognac to a Miller Lite crowd. But, dealers like this are great tables to visit to see some really rare stuff and if you want some elbow room.
THANKS FOR POSTING THIS. Now it makes it easier for me to understand the thread!
Oh, my...and of course this opinion of her comes from a very knowledgeable, market-savvy, long-time professional numismatist we all would instantly recognize due to his contributions to the hobby.
I like her plain-spoken style. It feels honest. It's possible that some of her clientele share that feeling, so counterintuitively, her unpolished grammar might actually help her business. The substance of what she writes about is interesting. I enjoy reading her perspectives about the coin business.
It's threads like this that keep me coming back.
what lynch mob here.
