Which Morgan Type Would You Rather Own??

erwindocerwindoc Posts: 5,438 ✭✭✭✭✭

Spent lots of time this weekend so far just browsing for coins. I came across a pair of Morgan dollars that I posted below. Grade aside, would you rather have a collection of white near PL coins or Toned gems?

I would lean more toward the attractively toned pieces, but sometimes the prices get out of hand. I also don’t care for artificial toning, and sometimes collectors disagree over what is artificial and what is natural.

In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

I like toned coins, but between these two coins I like the white near PL better.

I agree with @Billjones on this Grade aside the toner has character and is natural just my taste not to much not to little.

I assume the reverse of the 90-S is not PL? MS67 79-S, 80-S and 81-S Morgans are common enough that one should be picky with these and not just buy a generic 67. I like the toning, but the jury's out on the surfaces. If the coin is a knock-out in person, then I'd probably favor this one. I am intrigued by the 90-S, as they have rather low pops in PL/DMPL, so this may be a good buy. If both sides are as shown, this would have easily been called PL or better ca. 1990.

The 79s in superb gem with nice color seems more appealing to me.

Why not do both and go with toned PL/DMPL Morgan's. @blu62vette can help you out

Ive got a 64 * Morgan (forget the date, but common) that is perfectly white. Ive never understood the grade or the star designation other than it looks like a nice 5. I bought it because the star piqued my curiosity and was close to the same price of a regular 64 and thought it could be compared to other Morgan’s for something I've been missing, like a certain cheek look, etc.

I think the Star on a white coin would be less available (just a guess) than a toned Morgan with one so I like it for that, but it doesn’t really help the grade describe the coin really.

I am a huge fan of both! For my set I also have a few bright white coins as well for variety. Here’s a nice pair:

Toned coins? No thanks. Mostly because the toners with eye appeal are way overpriced.

I prefer the white, PL coin.... I do not like tarnish on my coins.... If I wanted environmental damage, I can do it myself - much cheaper....Cheers, RickO

Neither coin gets me excited. My money would stay in my wallet.
