what grade would you give this 1915 half?

I would grade it a 63+/4 unless that is a wipe by the face as opposed to striations/polish.

No grade to me.......that face and neck area kills the coin for me.

65+ - presuming the marks on the obverse near the mouth are less evident in hand.

Wow, the reverse is nice. Strike usually isn’t this good. Looks like bad acne or a shaving accident as a youngster. It’s probably in a 64 holder but looks 63 to me. Still, I’d rather have a nice AU than this one. I’d never quit seeing the problems.

    Edited......

I just looked it up. Hmmmmm. Possibly, the photo is over-emphasizing the cheek stuff and it’s actually only mild luster breaks. Maybe phenomenal luster carries it. Still, the hit is there and can’t be un-seen.

Probably in a 64 holder with today’s new standards. I would say a 62. Wouldn’t own it with the hits to the face. First thing I (or a future buyer) would see every time you looked at it.

MS61. The marks on the face are very distracting. A coin I would not want to own.

I know it's likely in a higher holder but the cheek makes it a 63 to me.

Well it's obvious it's a MS coin with bag marks and perhaps a scuff on the obverse which kills the focal point of this otherwise nice coin. If it makes 60-61 or even a 62 rather than DETAILS I'd be a happy camper.

Looks near gem but "too cleaned" as Mr. Mills would say; these don't usually come so white.

I would say MS-62. It appears to have great luster, but the marks on the face and neck are very distracting. If it didn't have the vertical scrapes down the neck and under the chin, it would be an MS-63, but those marks take it out of the "Choice Mint State" category for me.

If those marks are as prominent as they appear in the photo, I would rather have a nice, smooth AU-58 with a just a brush of wear, but that's my taste.

The luster must be phenomenal: "Pure white Gem! The 1915 Philadelphia is the second lowest mintage in the entire Barber half dollar series (after the 1914). Consequently, it is rare and desirable even in the lowest grades. This Gem has clean surfaces and is 100% fully struck. The luster is bright and white." http://www.collectorscorner.com/Products/Item.aspx?id=32744749 Coinfacts has a lot of examples, mainly toned: http://www.pcgscoinfacts.com/Coin/Detail/6471

  • MS61 or maybe 62 because of the hits on the cheek and neck

I said 64, but not astonishing it’s in a 65. Without bothering to look I would guess it’s a recent submission. The girls all get prettier at closing time !!!! Still a 62 in my book. Much rather have a great looking 58

It’s a problem coin. Why own it?

The image posted must make the coin worse than viewing in person, that's the only logical conclusion I came up with for it to grade MS-65

A pcgs MS65 that no will buy.

  • rickoricko Posts: 98,724 ✭✭✭✭✭

I would grade it a 62..... the obverse has several hits and in focal areas. The reverse is really nice, but, IMO, not enough to carry it. I would not buy this coin. Cheers, RickO

Agreed. If the cut on Liberty's cheek pops up, even at an angle, I would be reluctant to buy it because I couldn't unsee it. Makes it a 64 market grade at best in my book. The fields and luster carry it I imagine. If the rough area in the photo is not a problem, photo suggest a 66, sans the prominent cut.

I was thinking 63, then saw the link. For an MS65 coin like that, the cheek gouge would not do it for me. Surely at that price point it would be possible to find a 65 without the cheek issue.

I was looking at auction records of higher grade Isabella 25c coins and invariably they were strongly toned; why it is often hard to get good grades the grading services usually see raw with significant toning. This one looks straight from the mint with a little chatter as everyone noted.

Based on photos, I’d guess 63 and am surprised by a 65 being assigned (even with the apparent luster).
