1928 PEACE DOLLAR AU58 ~ Does it looks more like MS63? *********HAPPY ENDING*******

Please render your opinion before I pull the trigger. I am debating whether to spend the additional $$$ on MS63 or this beautiful AU58 $525

here it is

My budget is <$550 for an attractive one
While it appears to be nice from the photos, I think I'd have a hard time putting down $525 for it. That is approaching 63 money.

Let me see what's out there for MS63. Thanks
1928 Peace Dollars are seriously overrated. They aren't rare at all. Be selective and don't be generous with your offer.
Patience is one of the most underrated qualities of top coin collectors. I agree with @291fifth - there are many, many 1928 Peace Dollars out there... take your time search for a good MS63, maybe even one with CAC approval. If you don't find one in a month, take $40 out of your wallet and stick it in a drawer. Repeat every month. In a year, you'll either have an awesome MS63 or will have enough money to start looking for an MS64.

Go there and click on some of the recent auction results to get an idea of what these go for. Looks like unattractive 63's sell for under 500, but the nicer ones like the one that sold for $600 in December go for a bit more. I probably would have bid on that one had I been looking..
I agree with 291fifth, there are always some of these for sale.

No, I wouldn't pay that for that coin. It doesn't look bad, but that's a bad price. Prices on those have slid a bit in recent years, and if you're patient you can find one like that well under $400. Or like people above have stated, you can get a legit nice 63 for the price range you're talking about.
They are far from common and nice examples are uncommon
stunning AU and really nice. It is somewhat over priced and as others have suggested not rare. You can do a bit better for the same dollars and a great deal of patience.
Nice, but it seems overpriced

A local dealer who operated a shop in my area for more than 25 years accumulated a hoard of more than 200 choice 1928 Peace Dollars, one at a time, during the years he was in business. Keep in mind that this was a small shop in the suburbs. The 1928 Peace Dollar is very much overrated.
Nice coin, but I wouldn't pay that much for it.
not 63
That coin would be ok around $275, $525 is way too much imo. As others have stated you should be able to find a really nice 63 around $500-550.
The whole worlds off its rocker, buy Gold™.

Wooooha! Did someone just say it's officially "TACO™" Tuesday????
Too much, no dealer or serious collector would pay that kind of money for a 58. I have seen some sell or be offered for a little over $300. It is older holder, no cac sticker though. Keep searching.
NO, for all the reasons posted.
Seller turned down my $450 offer
Be happy he did. The 1928 Peace Dollar is, like just about every other 20th century key or semi-key date coin, heavily hoarded. There are plenty out there. Take your time. It's not a coin you should have on the top of your want list. In fact, why do you want one at all?
as you probably notice, I am new on this hobby and started collecting since mid 2017.
I like the Peace dollars and so far I've collected 21/22/23/24/25/27 in OGH and 35. I am not trying to do MM just the dates.
I agree with everyone else here on waiting. Also that is not in an ogh holder if that's what you were looking for.
It is a nice coin, but seems like a reach for that money.
Try to find a nicely toned one... so much more difficult...
Not a bad coin, but not a great one either. The price point is way too high.
As Mark Feld has told me many times, "You can do better."

Mint bags of these were released in Ohio during the 1950's, so quantities of AU/Uncs turning up in the Midwest is not surprising. I would not extrapolate this to most other key date 20th century examples, at least not in this grade range anyway. I would agree many low grade examples of exist of most 20th century keys.
If you are doing a date set with no concern for MM, then a 28-S might be a good choice as well. The price for the two are pretty close to each other in 63-64. The typical 28-S isn't as well stuck as its P mint sister though.

I collect Peace Dollars. Have multiple ungraded complete sets. Be patient. When you are inexperienced you tend to overpay. I have overpayed too often only to get a better coin at a lower price because like JG Wentworth... I wanted the coin NOW.
Yes you are right, the hard part is being discipline to find one at a right price. I am seeing some nice ones on eBay ranging from $600 and up for MS63/64
I agree with the majority here... that is overpriced and there are better deals out there.. Good luck with your set... Cheers, RickO
I also did a year set of these, but substituted a nice MS64 1928-D, unless you're trying to stick to Philly coins.

Um...... 28-D?
We still talking Peace dollars here?
It looks like a really nice slider AU that wouldn't look out of place in a CH BU set.
Yeah common key date, but not many AU58's look like that.
I've paid MS64 monies for AU58's and haven't gotten hurt.
You only need one buyer to see the coin the same way you did.
But why would you? If it is truly an AU58 and you are buying and selling it as an AU58, an Ms64 price is wholly unwarranted. If you buy it raw and there is some disagreement on whether it is truly AU58, that may be another matter. Unless it had monster toning or some other unique quality, 58 money is 58 money for a reason.

Love the grade of 58! That coin looks great! For the price though you should be able to get a much higher grade with similar eye appeal. Be patient like other have said. One will surely come along.
I look at AU58's differently as I want a trickled down MS67 coin with just a trace of rub you really need to tilt the coin to find. So when I look at a AU58 I generally grade them as A,B,C,D checklist wise. To get a bit deeper I grade them as AU50,53,55,58 all within the same AU58 holder. I've never seen AU58+ newer graded coin I consider as an AU58 I would pay up for and it's been about 5+ years since I've bought any AU58. Not for the lack of trying as I still glance daily, just not seeing any I'd want to own. I've even seen AU58's with Gold CAC stickers that I wouldn't touch. So that being said when a coin comes up that would fit into a Gem set and not look out of place which appeals to me it I'll pay up. AU58 pricing in general these days is also for quite a bit of garbage slipping into all grading services holders which needs to be wholesaled at sheet pricing just to get rid of.
My Bad! I meant '28 S not '28 D. That '28 D would be very rare!!

Broadstruck used to post some of the nicest AU58 coins on the planet back in the day.
Unless he still owns them, my guess is that they reside in MS-something holders now.
It appears that there is a rub going down the middle of the eagle on the reverse, which would explain the grade. Otherwise it is hard to tell from those pictures.
With a "Coin Facts" quote of $400 and the recent auction prices running higher than that, I'd say the price is on the high side.
Happy ending with this S MS63 OGH CAC
It is a good addition to my date set.....

I am very content with this one; of course there are better ones out there but the price increases substantially with each grade so I am very happy with this MS63
That 28-s is a very nice zero risk coin. On the other end of the spectrum I picked up a 28-s in XF in a dealers Peace dollar box for $23 recently.
Nice example.
Nice choice @Paradisefound! I like it much better than the OP 58. That's what I was talking about... a nice 63 with CAC approval, and you didn't even have to start shoving cash in a drawer... at least for this coin
. Now please try and keep it from being irradiated by incoming ballistic missiles.
I like that one a lot. Well done.
Nice! Glad it worked out!

Wow! Outstanding coin! Congrats!
Great!!
Nice 'happy ending'.... You seem happy and that is important. Cheers, RickO
