FUN Show Day 4, Summary

Hi Folks,
Saturday for this show, the previous ANA in Denver, and last year at FUN, have all been strange. I spend 2 days on the floor and come up with a fraction of the coins I hope to buy at each. Then Saturday comes and suddenly there are coins to buy. I want to see what I buy in hand so I generally set most of my yearly budget for coming to these 2 shows. I won't be in Philly for ANA this summer because it overlaps with a travel week for my work, so this was it, FUN or nothing. But several things came together and I found some very nice coins on Saturday morning before flying out.
I did another lot viewing for the Ha online auction before the bourse opened. There I ran into Ultra High Relief and drdm. It was great to meet drdm for the first time - he of some amazing bust halves. UHR and I then went to find a table to look over his inventory.
One of the coins I obtained on Saturday was my first bust quarter at the show - my primary goal. I had seen it the day before in a double row box of all types of PCGS holdered coins that a dealer was looking through that came from another dealer. At that time said dealer was not sure what he was going to be able to buy and what price. So I told him what I would pay to him for the coin and he told me he would find out if he could get it for me. Sat am before the show I had an email telling me he got it. He put it at a very small mark up and I appreciated that. Here it is below, a later die state and higher grade of the other 2 1836 B3's I have. For a 55 it bursts with luster even if the images don't show it. Surfaces look very original without any intentional intervention. So this fits my growing bust quarter set well.
I also got 3, yes 3 bust dollars on Saturday. One from Dave Perkins that I was eyeing for a couple days with a neat die crack. And then after that, I was at another table and saw 2 more. With the 2 that I got from Dave P earlier, I brought home 5 bust dollars. That was my secondary goal, to start on a Redbook variety collection of Bust Dollars. Well, that was a good start. Initially I was disappointed as I only found 1 to bid on in the Ha auction and I was not successful there. I am trying to buy coins with very good surfaces in worn grades - I am finding out that is not an easy task in this series. So leaving satisfied for sure.
Around 11 am, about 1.5 hours before I had to leave for my flight, I finally ran into scubafel, who is a serious collector of bust quarters. Our discussion lasted the whole 1.5 hours and he had some very late die state bust quarters to show me - all of them were amazing. We were able to talk about bust quarters quite abit and lay out some mutual plans for future study and communications with our sets.
Another board member that I got to talk to several times was Dave Wnuck. I always enjoy talking to him, sometimes he has a coin or token I buy. Thanks Dave for the discussions.
My observation about Tampa is that it is a nice venue except the location downtown is pretty lacking in a diverse and plethora of eating spots. A few very nice restaurants, but not much in terms of groceries (buy water, lunches, etc.) or fast good restaurants. So if one wants a quick bite, got to pay the crazy inflated prices at the Convention Center for the most part. Another problem was that they did not offer free internet in the lobby at the Convention Center where I could go do a detailed analysis for costing out a coin. All of the other CC's I have been to do this, so you just walk out of the bourse, do your work on the internet, and go back in to either purchase a coin or decide not to. Instead I had to go back to the hotel.
An interesting observation about downtown Tampa is that I had a hotel room that lined up with a street through downtown. I could see all the way through downtown via the street, and all of the lights on the street were coordinated for green and red meaning one could drive through downtown with no stopping on that street in normal traffic. If only my city was that functional. But as I noted earlier, it is very easy to move through Tampa and this evidence is consistent with that.
By 12:30 I had to get to the airport for my flight. Alot of dealers were on my flight, most of the locals and many connecting through. Bluevette already commented that he missed his connection. I saw him and his dad get off the plane and saw them at their connecting gate. Apparently they would not let them on despite the fact that the plane was there - I guess once the door closes they are not allowed to open it again for passengers just arriving. Todd said 7 passengers missed the flight because their first flights were slightly late. You would think that with that many arriving from slightly late first flights that they would have held the door open and waited - I have seen then do this before.
All in all a good show for me. I would have loved to have found a couple more bust quarters but walked away with some very nice coins and a nice bust dollar starter set. I will post them when I can get the images. I will finish off with an image of the uber coin - the 1820 STATESOF JR1 I talked about in the earlier post.

Thank you Ultra High Relief for introducing us. I’m sorry we didn’t have some more time to talk SH. I hope to run into you again at a show sometime in the near future so we can catch up some more.
By the way, that capped bust dime and quarter you posted are absolutely beautiful!
Personally, I prefer the bigger sized busts

Enjoyed the report - thanks!
Great report
Hi Folks,
Thanks for your kind words. Here is one of the bust dollars I was fortunate to pickup. They ranged in grade from P20 to P45, this is the 45. For clarity, it seems that when I post silver coins to the boards here, the images undergo a color shift - the patina is not that brown in my original image or on the coin. More gray in color. Lots of underlying luster - nice cartwheel under the light - gotta love these big coins for that.

Very nice, and entirely accurate EF bust dollar. Great find!
Thank you for the reports over the days @spacehayduke, I really enjoyed them and they made me feel like I was there. You made some really nice purchases. The 1836 quarter is very nice along with the 1800 bust dollar, and the bust dime is really attractive. It sounds like you had a great time.

Pretty coin. I love it.
SH, you worked hard and you scored........even if you had to make it happen on a Saturday. Maybe Saturday might be the best time to make a deal with a dealer itching to go home with money instead of coins.
OINK
That is a beautiful dollar.

Hi Folks,
Thanks for the kind words. Here is one more pick up at FUN, although I had bought it in the Fall and picked it up at the dealers table first day. Finally got it imaged.
