Lakesammman's 2018 FUN report (updated).

Got diverted to Denver for a medical emergency - have to shut off computer for takeoff - more later. :D

Flew down from Seattle on Wed. late afternoon to be greeted by Boiler78 and son. They were kind enough to let me stay with their family about 1 hr outside of Tampa. That night was a dinner with fellow collectors and dealers at Bern's Steak House, a local favorite with a massive wine cellar. Dessert and a talk by QDB followed.

Thursday morning we arrived at the convention center at 9:55am expecting to get in shortly thereafter but were treated by the FUN personnel having a seemingly overblown opening ceremony with bagpipes, solos, speeches and ribbon cutting. We finally made it through the doors at 10:20 or so.

Made a bee-line to PCGS to drop off 2 regrades then scoured the floor for collectible holders. Unfortunately, there weren't too many so I had to look at real coins! :D

Stopping at Kagins is always a treat - great coins and always a treat to catch up with Regulated. Almost latched on to a gold nugget but thought better of it - don't need one more rabbit trail. Others visited (in no particular order) include Mr. and Mrs. CRO, MrEureka, NumismaticAmericana, JK, JD, Joe O'conner, Van Simmons, Todd Imhoff, Mr. and Mrs. TahoeDale, EERC (and Kenny), BWRC, S. Blay, Dr. Duckor, Todd/Roger P. and others that may not want their name mentioned.

There wasn't much in the auction for me except 4 named patterns that were exciting in pre-bidding but then had a high reserve placed on them. None sold. Would have loved to buy all 4 but that wasn't going to happen with the competition.

Friday was more bourse shopping. Saw a pattern Doily at Mr. Eurekas but Boiler78 bought it. Saw a few other Doilies but the price was too high for the quality of the coins. The PCGS luncheon at 11:30am was well attended, this years slab containing a 1918 penny. S. Blay was seen hassling the PCGS staff, asking if he could go through the box looking for a 18-S! :D The program was relatively short, Don Willis announcing the Gold Shield service. B. Stuppler talked a bit about counterfeits and announced that HA would be auctioning donated coins, the proceeds of which would go towards the fight against counterfeits.

During lunch checked my VISA bill and noted the PCGS charges w/o the 1% upgrade/crossover fee - rats!

Ran into a friend who has an interest in Saints so sold him my 1928 MS67 CAC Saint. Glad it found a good home.

That night back at Boiler78's we had pizza and wrangled over a few coins in the process. He ended up with one of my coins and I got the pattern in a Doily and a Saint with an interesting history - nice coin dropped by his roommate many years ago with a small rim ding, called repaired by PCGS.

Sat. was a short day because of travel. Boiler78 and I separately scoured the floor. I found 8 early ANA slabs with decent toning and the gold foil reverse. Got a lead on a Swedish coin I need for my Monarchs of Sweden set - will buy IF MrEureka approves of it.


Got to the airport and offered to buy Blue67 (Todd) a beer but he was too far away to hear me. :D Then got on the flight that was diverted to Denver on the way - turning a 6 hour flight into a 8 hour one. Learned 3 things from that. 1 - it's bad to land with too much fuel - mechanics had to sign off on it. 2 - The passenger for whom we landed used enough Oxygen that we had to fly at a lower altitude from Denver to Seattle and 3 - You can't hear the attendants calling for a doctor when you are in the John! :D

    I got stuck in Houston overnight. Missed the connection even though I could see the plane still at the jetway.

    Nice report... good looking batch of Morgans....All sorts of things can happen on flights.... I used to fly all the time when I was working.... strange things happen ... learned never to absolutely count on any flight...just go with the flow. Cheers, RickO

    great report, Tim. I need to get to another one of these large shows to meet you and a few others. the crabfest in Baltimore and then a show in Pittsburgh where everyone met at the "Church Brewery" are highlights of my Numismatic/PCGS life. Boiler was a treat to talk with and having the two of you together would probably be a coin overdose. :)

    Those green PCGS boxes are awesome... my favorite color (gold goes so nice with green)...I do not have any of those... I wonder if they ever come up on ebay... will look. Cheers, RickO

    Did you find the dark green or lime green?? There were only about 5 of the lime green made and they were rejected as the plastic was too thin and tended to collapse into the box. I had to heat mine up on receipt and pry it back into shape, then put several samples in it until it cooled off.
