Why is there so much excitement around proof 1877 twenty cent coins?
The auction prices for these guys just blew the price guides out of the water by multiples. Yet the other twenty cent coins didn't achieve theirs. So why is there so much excitement about these 1877s?

I expected these to go for more than 12k-13k
Because @Billjones wanted one!
Legend said something about new collectors with lots of cash buying up all the nice proof 20 cents available.
But only 1877 year proof 20 cents? The other ones did not take in strong money.

Someone(s) may just be hoarding those, wouldn't affect other dates.
I asked my neighbor the same question. She did not have an answer.
We just wrote about this in the January Quarterly. The article can be found on our blog site.

Nice Greysheet article...I wish the chart showed the last two years of data so we could better visualize the huge increase in prices...thanks for the link!
