    Guns, guns, and more guns!

seems like a complete waste of money, and I would never want to trade or profit from it

Guns sure are good though at protecting the other stuff.

That was in response to guns, guns, and guns.

You really only need one for protection. Maybe a few others for hunting. To amass an arsenal because of fear of the government or hispanic gansters in crazy. If you collect antique guns, that is a different story, go for it.

I am in San Diego county also. I also about your same age. I find I do a lot of day hikes in the local hills. Many off trail . I saw a bobcat recently. Maybe join you at your claim for fun in the future. Anyway being outside is my pick.

You could take flying lessons. My dad flew small planes for years and only owned his own plane for a short period.
Golf. Once you get past the point where you want to break every club in the bag it's very relaxing and fun.

Definitely some really good hikes in San Diego.

You are welcome to go out to the claim anytime. Split 50/50 any gold we will find. I have all of the equipment needed. Fall, winter and spring is all good. Summer is a no go as it is in the desert.

Reloading, hunting and shooting - goes hand in hand with fishing and if you reload, it can be quite addictive and fun. Setting up a pistol shooting drill is also a blast and quite challenging at first.

Take a walk over to the sports card forum :)

    Nope, not into "guns"

Altho, I do want go hunting for non-native species like wild turkey and wild boars.

Professional sports, (and sports cards) are the most boring and bad for you (sitting on a coach) thing that I can ever imagine

Absolutely. I mean, collecting coins and sitting while looking at them is SO VASTLY DIFFERENT than collecting sportscards. Sitting on the coach might add an interesting new wrinkle though, I grant you.

poker. (but it will take time and discipline to properly learn in order for it to be profitable).

When referring to my hobbies of coins and poker, I tell my friends one is gambling, and the other is poker.

Well ya, I absolutely love poker.

I used to play online before Bush and Sheldon shut that down. Cant believe all the online sports betting going on but no online poker. Complete game of SKILL!!!!!! It was such a good way to make money at home.

I use to and occasionally go to casinos to play poker. NOT the same as online. Much harder to make a buck. You need to be a grinder which is way too boring for me.

If they brought back online poker I would play many, many hours every day.

I truly can't believe how ONE rich a##hole named Sheldon Adelson is allowed to lobby so many republicans to force them to vote no to online poker for donations ...... what Sheldon says, they do, unbelievable!!!!!!

Online poker for many many hours of the day certainly is better than sitting down to look at sportscards. LOL

I like the idea of a hobby within the confines of my warm comfortable home and something safe. I'm not dying by the saying "he died doing something he loved."
Coming on sixty I want to make seventy or more.
I've already done the adventurous hobby thing.....survived some very dangerous near death experiences and always seemed to have a guardian angel with me.
We just lost a young (26yrs.) neighbor to a hiking death in Montana.....he stopped at ridge/cliff to take a picture and a 60 mph wind came up and took him home. Two hikers seen him fall to his death.
I'm thinking model car/plane building and a HO model railroad layout. Yeah.... I like this idea a lot.

Absolutely sucks to lose one's life so young. I think you'd have a lot of fun with model building and an HO layout. Two ways to approach that -- an HO layout could take literally decades and never be "quite finished" or you could set up a basic layout, be done in a year and enjoy tinkering with it from there. With modeling individual items, you can have a sense of accomplishment per model, and unless you take it to extremes (I'm going to make every panel a working feature) you can build up a decent collection, one at a time.

Counter-point noted! Yes, then that'd be fine, actually quite good for you vs. sitting.

Along those same lines, we should all have a standing desk setup for enjoying coins, cards, stamps, butterfly mounts, whatever!

WoW rock climbing kayaking coin collecting prospecting gold mining, All the other things you have done and you are burned out and bored. forgot boy scouts hiking poker player etc. With all that experience and a passion for coins we need a few good people in politics. seems the only open area you haven't explored. Pick an office, preferably one that will pay well and go for it. Who knows, You can be on the inside to battle Sheldon Addison to get on line poker as an Olympic event , or have a coin show in the White House , Oh what the heck, look guy, life is a one way ticket and there are no do overs. You have a 10 year old who will never be a 10 year old again , That's what's important. Pick a hobby he likes and get involved. Coach his soccer or baseball or buy a big bag of pennies and together catalog them. Sell the good ones and buy more. Help him start an on line store. The world is changing. The mints have become profit oriented and short runs or errors are a thing of the past. Comic books past, baseball cards past, Today the world is focused on AI and global climate change and electronic gaming. You want to find a hobby that will be profitable, Take up Hydroponics , there is a world hunger rolling across this planet, Last year has seen famines as a result of floods and hurricanes and drought and mega fires and people are starving. Food and clean drinking water outweighs a carload of gold coins. People may lose interest in one hobby or another but you can bet your last 1909 svdb that people are going to eat and drink water at a minimum of twice a day every day. That's 8 billion meals a day and growing. By the time your son is graduating High school, he could own 10 chemically free food / fruit stands and be a multi millionaire in his own right , and he'll have a built in magnet for coins that can feed your coin collecting hobby. HMMMMMM! You Know, I think I'll plant another 20 fruit trees and 15 grape vines.

Interesting point of view, and can't argue with the need to eat and drink.

Very, very nicely done and great artistry on your part! Would be very surprised if your layout wasn't featured in one of the hobby railroading mags. Nice work!

1st of all originalisbest. I absolutely thought this picture was of a real landscape. Very, very impressive. Your attention to detail is awesome .
About My point of view, Go back to the original post by errorsoncoins and read all his responses. This guy is educated, skilled and knowledgeable , He also has a wickedly funny sense of humor. I followed all the way through LMAO . I thought to try a little levity on his behalf and yet point out that with all his skills and knowledge, This is the Greatest country on this earth, anything you can set your mind to is possible, but don't forget as King Soloman said on his death bed, He had 300 wives and 500 concubines, 10,000 sheep and 15000 goats and " ALL WAS FOLLY ". The only thing that matters in the end is family and their love.
The fruit trees and grapes comment was to allude to wine and apples or peaches. I know how to make cheese at home and with the help of goats milk, I can at least eat fruit and cheese and drink wine occasionally helped with goat meat even if and when the world falls apart.

    I only target large fish

I'll stand by fly fishing -- makes it more challenging and more satisfying. I don't know where you are geographically, but for reference I know guys who catch 30# stripers, 40" northern pike, and 50" muskies on the fly rod. I've caught lots of salmon and steelhead into the 12-15# range on the fly. For bigger I'd have had to go where the fish run bigger -- tackle or method was not the limiting factor. The only things I can think of that a good fly angler couldn't catch large examples of are fish with poor eyesight like some of the sharks, or big open water pelagic stuff, like bluefin.

You are more than welcome. Should set up a SoCal coin forum prospecting weekend.

The best gold is in the desert so your not panning except for panning out the concentrate produced from the dry wash plant which is very efficient and fast. Almost too much for one person. Works great with two people. Even better with more as then you can run way more dirt.

Too far for a day trip so it is best to camp two nights to get in a full day plus some. It is hard work digging and shoveling so you got to be willing and able to do hours of that.

I can guarantee you two things. You will find Gold in every bucket. You will Not pay for the gas to get there with the gold you find.

I love trains. At present I have three UP 3900s and a 4000 (Big Boy). Only problem is space right now as the 4000 needs 36 inch radius curves and my play room is too small. All four steamers are DCC. I will never cease to enjoy coins, planes and trains, especially a steam engine. Got a cab ride in one and it was nice but can get old after a couple of hours when you ride in early summer.

    Nice layout.

Orientering or sky diving. Both are fun.

    Wow two extremes!!!!

I have friends that skydive. Not for me as I like to have control over all situations. I have no control when being flown by someone else.

Skydiving you are also dependent on your equipment. Rock climbing for example, you are dependent on yourself, equipment and partner are for backup.

I am a skydive pilot. Come to Kentucky and I will take you up :)

Have you ever 'lost' a drone ?

I've never had one "fly off" but I did destroy one in a crash. The DJI Phantoms are pretty tough. They have survived some pretty good crashes and keep on flying.
