I just shot a spray paint can (with a pellet gun) to depressurize it in order to allow my wife to open it up for the glass marble inside. She is kinda OCD right now about sea glass, sea glass marbles , and marbles ....

I had no idea that they used glass marbles in paint cans, always assumed they were metal ball bearings.

I should have titled the thread .... the "OCD Thread" as everyone of you here have it.

Since you just bought your son a Nerf as an outdoors kinda guy you should both go Paintball. I think you'd both have a blast, but be forewarned it's addictive & could easily become your new hobby even not being into guns.

To Err Is Human.... To Collect Err's Is Just Too Much Darn Tootin Fun!

I agree with AUandAG. You certainly don't need to invest a lot of money or be a techie to do drone photography for your own pleasure or for profit. I like to take photos of our community and then create videos for posting on our community Facebook page. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oWLQFd_LKIA

Wow, you produced that, very nicely done!!!!! Nice touch with the "Princess Bride Music"

This is another consideration. If I went that route, It would have to be super high end and marketable. I would have to learn video editing software. I would never shoot for "high end home owners" as I only shoot for myself and sell stock photos or in this case stock footage.

Even tho I love the idea, probably not. Video is so different from still. Still is way harder in a way. A single frame must hold the viewer interest.

Orientering or sky diving. Both are fun.

Learn a new language and go somewhere that you have to speak it. I did this last summer and highly recommend it..

I have been wanting to spend some time in Baja which would be my first choice. How do I get over that wall?

Canada is second choice but their language is really weird.

    Wow two extremes!!!!

I have friends that skydive. Not for me as I like to have control over all situations. I have no control when being flown by someone else.

Skydiving you are also dependent on your equipment. Rock climbing for example, you are dependent on yourself, equipment and partner are for backup.

This could be fun if you are good on your feet.
And much more family friendly than, say, wingsuit proximity flying:

I have had stories that I wrote published in magazines before. A lot of work for little pay. I would be better off writing stories for a social media campaign for my businesses that I have yet to develop.

Knife making .... Just watched forged in fire, a very cool show. Very neat hobby. My carpal tunnel from all my hobbies plus intense computer usage probably would not allow for that hobby. I decided against hobo nickels for the same reason.

Gardening, I do Bonsai and grow medicinal plants

Woodworking cool hobby but carpal tunnel again.

    yawn.

It sounds like you aren't interested in much else or have already tried it. Also, sounds like health issues stop you from everything else. Maybe your next hobby would be less strenuous and active. Meditation?? :D

What about our sister company...PSA Professional Sports Authenticators. You could start a very nice trading card collection as a hobby. I have well over 1,000+ Baseball cards and non-sports cards all graded by PSA.
Their website is exactly like PCGS and the registry is also, but it is different.

He did have an accident a year later where he hit his legs and broke both ankles, a fibula and tore his ACL. It's on youtube as well.
I guess that would count as a "close call" (relative to a fatality). Others have died, of course.

So I guess the carpal tunnel will probably rule out a return to climbing. Oh well, many other good options.

I like the idea of a hobby within the confines of my warm comfortable home and something safe. I'm not dying by the saying "he died doing something he loved."
Coming on sixty I want to make seventy or more.
I've already done the adventurous hobby thing.....survived some very dangerous near death experiences and always seemed to have a guardian angel with me.
We just lost a young (26yrs.) neighbor to a hiking death in Montana.....he stopped at ridge/cliff to take a picture and a 60 mph wind came up and took him home. Two hikers seen him fall to his death.
I'm thinking model car/plane building and a HO model railroad layout. Yeah.... I like this idea a lot.

Not so sure about that. When I started kayak fishing, I used to paddle (I now have a foot pedal) for miles on end every week. Trashed my hands, made it hard to sleep. But after a few years of that, I realized it made my hands stronger and have less issues now than I did before. A hard days mining brings it back as does working in photoshop all day. Climbing may well strengthen my hands.

I grew up in San Diego and have never surfed. I have boogie boarded and body surfed many times. I do go through and come in the surf on my kayak. Most of my kayak fishing friends also surf.

I have been very tempted to try surfing. I have thought about it the last couple of years. I kinda figured I might be too old (55) and that it would be hard on the body. But you say the opposite. Hmmmm. Maybe get my ten year old into boggie boarding this summer and see where that leads us. Thank you

    >

Well then that's perfect - you already have friends who go, and you have lots of wave experience. What I mean by not being hard on your body is that it can be good exercise but it's not hard on your joints like running. I kayak too, and if your experience is anything like mine, it was more of a workout when I was new to the sport. That's how surfing is. Most of the time, you're just sitting and relaxing in the ocean, bs-ing with your friends. I started taking my son when he was five - good times.

I mainly fish live bait as that is what most people catch large fish on. My nephew is an avid kayak fly fisherman. He catches way more fish than I do. I catch much larger fish than he does. I only target large fish.

Are you looking more for mind or body or both? Sounds like you might be looking for something less sedentary.

Scuba (if you have access nearby) or yoga might be good for both the physical and mental aspects.

I was going to suggest taking a blacksmithing class and see how that went, but it looks like that is a no go due to the carpal tunnel. (love Forged in Fire too).

Travel things could be good, but maybe not until the kiddos are out of the house. Try to hit a coin show on every continent (well, maybe not Antartica).

Do you like dogs? Adopt a greyhound! Turns out greyhound people are obsessive and weird and you can make quite a hobby out them! They are a bit 'unique' and not always the most dog-like dog.

Antique Radios. They have a two fold appeal. They are functional (they do something,a radio signal can be tuned into for listening pleasure). And they are very decorative and add style to any home. They also serve as a conversation piece. The tube sets that light up are cool as well. Some have chrome inlays on the cabinets. You could also learn how to repair them. That would be a hobby onto itself. The catalin plastic types are very high end and have great color and some exhibit a marble, swirl like pattern. Lots of history as well in the various companies that manufactured the radios. Go to Ebay and look under antique radios. Good luck in your quest for a new hobby.

WoW rock climbing kayaking coin collecting prospecting gold mining, All the other things you have done and you are burned out and bored. forgot boy scouts hiking poker player etc. With all that experience and a passion for coins we need a few good people in politics. seems the only open area you haven't explored. Pick an office, preferably one that will pay well and go for it. Who knows, You can be on the inside to battle Sheldon Addison to get on line poker as an Olympic event , or have a coin show in the White House , Oh what the heck, look guy, life is a one way ticket and there are no do overs. You have a 10 year old who will never be a 10 year old again , That's what's important. Pick a hobby he likes and get involved. Coach his soccer or baseball or buy a big bag of pennies and together catalog them. Sell the good ones and buy more. Help him start an on line store. The world is changing. The mints have become profit oriented and short runs or errors are a thing of the past. Comic books past, baseball cards past, Today the world is focused on AI and global climate change and electronic gaming. You want to find a hobby that will be profitable, Take up Hydroponics , there is a world hunger rolling across this planet, Last year has seen famines as a result of floods and hurricanes and drought and mega fires and people are starving. Food and clean drinking water outweighs a carload of gold coins. People may lose interest in one hobby or another but you can bet your last 1909 svdb that people are going to eat and drink water at a minimum of twice a day every day. That's 8 billion meals a day and growing. By the time your son is graduating High school, he could own 10 chemically free food / fruit stands and be a multi millionaire in his own right , and he'll have a built in magnet for coins that can feed your coin collecting hobby. HMMMMMM! You Know, I think I'll plant another 20 fruit trees and 15 grape vines.

I have loved aviation since i was 12 years old and began flying radio control aircraft. Still love it after 50 years. Entry cost are pretty low and you can fly anything from a Piper Cub to a jet. I like em all but a well built Mustang always gets the attention.

R/C is a great hobby and 99% of the people are great. Once you learn to fly you will spend $4-5 dollars on fuel flying all day provided you do not crash but that is going to happen.

  • thebeavthebeav Posts: 3,915 ✭✭✭✭✭

Boy, a lot of great ideas in this thread !
I'm an amateur radio operator. It's a delightful hobby, but you can't make any money from it. It does require licensing, a degree of study, an interest in electronics, etc.....Communicating with someone else somewhere using Morse code can be quite relaxing and very enjoyable. You can collect QSL cards from states, countries, grid squares, counties, etc. So it has that 'collecting' thing too.....
For online poker try 'betonline' and 'globalpoker'......

Drone videos are amazing. I didn’t realize how fun and easy it was until we got a DJI Phantom 4 and flew it out over the coast to where we couldn’t see it anymore. I used to rock climb and ski in the backcountry. Bringing a drone to remote areas could be very fun.

Scuba diving with an underwater DSLR case is something I’ve wanted to do but haven’t gotten around to yet. It’s amazing looking at fish underwater. So far, I’ve just used a GoPro and the videos of moving underwater with the fish are fun too.

Of course, both of these are more fun with editing and soundtracks which also are much easier than I throught using a Mac but you have to enjoy it.

You could hook up with a local realtor and do it for new listings - it might turn into a job though.
Online poker is in Nevada is growing and will soon mingle player pool with New Jersey, but I am guessing you have no desire to move.

Realtors don't pay photographers very well so no on that.

I could never live in New Jersey and Nevada is a no go as well. I hear the pool is still way to small. Before black friday, I could play online poker and take money from any one in any state or country. You NEED a very large pool in order to find the fish.
