Actual sale (Buy-it-now). Apparently the seller is an antiques dealer that didn't realize what he had.

    Holy £#+&@# !
If real, that is a T-Rex sized score.

hmm. I'm not seeing the normal diagnostics for a 1911-D, but I sure would have taken a chance on it if I saw it.

  • jwittenjwitten Posts: 5,218 ✭✭✭✭✭

Actually, I just looked at the bigger version of the pics, and ya, I'd say it's real. And toned, too. Darn it!

The one I got from you was 3 times the cost of that, and it had a hole in it. Thanks for reminding me, Grinch.

This is a LIE!!!!! I have NEVER done business with you. I also, have NEVER sold a 1911-d $2 1/2 gold with a hole in it. I have reported you to the moderators.

LOL. At least the one (1911-D ) I got was in a PCGS holder. It was from John at Arizona (Rare?) Coin, at a show a couple years ago. And maybe that’s not you. I also sold a few $2.5 gold Indians to John. He was a nice older gentleman. Maybe it wasn’t the OP. Sorry. I thought that was you. And if my post upset you, I’m sorry (and amused)

    Anyway...may your holiday be blessed.

My name is Mitch, NOT John. I am the sole proprietor of Arizona Rare Coins...........So, you are amused at FALSELY accusing me of something that I did not do! WOW. Next time you ATTACK someone, make sure you know what you're doing. I never ever did business with you, I've never met you and I've never owned nor sold a 1911-d $2 1/2 gold with a hole/plugged in my life.

PS: Learn how to apologize properly and admit when you are WRONG!

I honestly didn't even see his first post as an attack or anything. A holed 1911-D for about $900 is not a rip off or anything, he was simply pointing out how awesome of a deal this buyer got. He was not accusing anyone of anything. Just my opinion.

Yeah, it's a compliment to be called a "GRINCH" and to be accused of something that you didn't do.

  • Here is also where the negative is truly deserved. I was being sarcastic about the "Help" and the paybacks were meant for this thread.

A sale on ebay is a legal binding contract. Sure it was a rip and I have sold a few things too cheap before because I didn't do my research. I have never cancelled a sale because I sold something too cheap.

This seller is a business and I would think a polite should "I have my lawyer contact you?" might uncancel the sale....Maybe?

  • BoosibriBoosibri Posts: 12,304 ✭✭✭✭✭

The most likely scenario is that someone on this board contacted the seller.

I never contacted the seller. I was alerted to this listing by a dealer in Philadelphia. He emailed and called the seller over the weekend. If you want this dealers name, you can PM for it.....I do NOT buy on eBay and do not contact sellers/buyers on their sales.

PS: Do you agree that blitzdude is a great guy?

Nonetheless, that was a heck of a “pick”. I wonder if the seller will contact the person he got it from and make them whole. One good turn deserves another, right ? Only exception is: your pick was fair game. In closing let me add: pawn brokers and antique dealers are no numismatists and people who sell their coins to them are likely not numismatists either. I can't understand how a seller could be so stupid not to zero in on the (possible) mintmark. Magnification is de rigueur. Santa Claus woke up from his stupor.

The "buyer" could contact the seller and negotiate another buy based on new information. 50% of potential fair value?

    http://www.pcgscoinfacts.com/Coin/Detail/7943 Worth thousands apparently.

  • davewesendavewesen Posts: 6,537 ✭✭✭✭✭

I sometimes find good value from antique dealers, because they occasionally have no idea what they have.

Whenever I think I made a score, I wait until item is in hand. I can't tell you how many times I was wrong and I misinterpreted the pics or the seller made a mismatch showing a reverse from another item they are selling.

This thread amused me for 5 minutes.

OP just dropped a grenade in the room, everyone is pulling shrapnel out now.

    Crazy.

WTB... errors, New Orleans gold, and circulated 20th key date coins!
  • jwittenjwitten Posts: 5,218 ✭✭✭✭✭

For what it's worth, I think the coin is cleaned, and won't straight grade. Still a heck of a cherry pick though.
