Do you know what is SAD ?

1630Boston1630Boston Posts: 14,111 ✭✭✭✭✭

This is sad to me, especially at this juncture in time.

I thought long and hard all day [when I was not working], and there is absolutely no one, nobody that I consider friends or relatives, that I would give coins or bullion to for the Holidays. :disappointed:

Mainly because of their lack of understanding of the value/history/significance of such a present.

Some people don't like chemistry, either.
    So it goes.

Same here too. Kids are grown and have no interest in coins.

Hey, I like chemistry. Chemical engineer for 40+ years.

Don't get discouraged. Just like chemistry, not everyone likes coins. Be thankful for those of us that do.

Actually, I am currently (dubbed) on French TV on a show dealing with space memorabilia. I signed a non-disclosure agreement with the show producers, so I'm keeping quiet on public boards until the show's run is complete.

    Happy Holidays to you too!

I showed my wife my coins. My trust says she can keep whichever she likes, and the rest will be sold. She liked five of them. All toned coins of various denominations which have their own personalties, of sorts. Some Unc., some not.

As others have said, I wouldn't worry about it. Just a thought: some people might like a coin from their birth year.

I helped my 9 yr old nephew fill a state quarters album by searching bank rolls and pocket change and I am hoping it sparks a deeper interest. He likes the idea of filling the album
Why not give some of those albums to the kids with a few coins already in place or with a roll of quarters and see what happens

Yep. Sadly, I'm the only coin nerd in my entire family.

But HEY! That means more coins for me!

Have you thought about giving a birth year mint or proof set, or maybe a birth year silver eagle? Something about the coin the person can relate to.

@1630Boston.... Have you had your DNA tested?? We may be distant relatives....Then you will have a relative interested in coins and someone who would appreciate a coin gift... ME!!! Ta-daaa..... :D:D You never know... My wife and I had our DNA tested... and then did extensive research on ancestors... turns out we have a common ancestor about 8 generations ago..... You never know.... ;) Cheers, RickO

Coin collecting is a sub culture, do we really want everyone in it? I don’t try to turn folks onto it that don’t appear to have the proper respect for it. I love it too much. Sometimes it’s a waste of breath. The ones that do, I’m generous with, but they are few.

As far as gift giving I always thought of the golden rule. Then I heard of the platinum rule. The ‘platinum’ rule? Do unto others as THEY would have you do UNTO them. If that’s coins, cool, I’d not, cool

  • I was thinking of getting my granddaughters each a state quarter board and then each time they come over give them another one for their album.

For most people, the most "valuable" coin they deal with is a quarter. 50 centers and $1 coins just are oddities and typical a pain to deal with, so gotten rid of quickly.

So how many people would find interesting and collect something worth 25 cents and you can get as many as you want from the bank.

Until the mindset changes, coin collecting will struggle.

I'm not feeling sad about being in the same situation. Can't force things. I don't have to rely upon their interest/enjoyment in order for me to maintain same in my appreciation of the hobby.

I wish some younger member of the family had some interest, but I too have no family members who share my interest in coins.

Bought my 7 year old grandson a Lincoln Cent book for his birthday in October. He asked for a Jefferson Nickel book for Christmas. I think I started something.

Was speaking with a very good old girlfriend and I mentioned I collect coins. She showed an immediate attraction to them. She asked dozens of questions, so I bought her the 2017-S Clad proof set and a 2018 Redbook for Christmas.

Show the kids a box of coins and tell you're going to sell them for that much.

I predict some interest within a minute or so. :o:p

When I see SAD in all capital letters it makes me think of a subacromial decompression.

Yeah..... probably not what you were thinking.

I gave out 13 silver eagles this year! My coworkers seem to think they’re cool. Half of them told me they have Morgan dollars at home.

Sorry to hear you have no one close to you to share your coin passion with, so that is sad. Hopefully someone will come along.

I am fortunate enough to have my brother in law to collect coins with. He is the one that got me started again after a 25 year hiatus.
