1970 Dcam Proof Kennedy

Pretty sure the 2nd is a Dcam but would like your opinion. Thank you for looking

    The 1970 S is not a deep cameo. There is no frosting or cameo effect on the coin that would justify DC.

    The 2x2 plastic sometimes makes a coin look CAM.....need to remove to see.

    Ok will take out. Perhaps my thoughts are wrong but thought Dcam is when it has a light field 4 inches out from coin. Reflection.

    Possibly cameo. I think it needs some serious frost to get a DCAM.

    You are confusing Deep Mirror Prooflike circulation strike coins with Deep Cameo Proof Coins.

    Here is a 1978-S half dollar that PCGS graded as a "DCAM." As you can see the contrast between the devices and the fields is very strong.


    Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

    Your 1970-S is a higher grade proof - it has deep mirrors. To be DCAM, it also needs strong white frost on the devices. Look at the pictures shown of DCAMS in CoinFacts

    The S is a proof, the D is a business strike. While there is certainly cameo contrast on the proof, IMO it is not DCAM. FWIW, here is my PCGS PR69DCAM to give you a rough idea (the white going into the fields by Kennedy's chin is a function of the light angle in relation to the camera)...

    I'm not certain the frost on yours is even heavy enough to get a CAM. It may be, but 1970 isn't a difficult year to find the crazy heavy frost like @SkyMan showed, so they aren't really motivated to give a moderately frosted coin even a CAM designation. Here's my 68 DCAM.

    Thanks for the props.

    The coin is one I found in an OGP proof set and purchased solely for the half dollar. It currently resides in my set of Capital holders containing 1950-1970 Cameo proof and SMS coins I have collected for the past 18 years. It is a nice one. The haze to the left of JFK's nose is one that can be removed with a dip.

    I agree, but over history, it is harder to make PCGS dcam than it is to make NGC ultracam. Not a huge gap, but a gap nonetheless.

    I don't believe the 70 S is a Dcam or a Ultra Cam. However it is a nice proof anyway.

    Great thread with super examples of mirrored proofs vs. DCAM's.... @SanctionII has a real beauty....The contrast between deep frost and super depth mirrors is the key.... I always felt the difference between UCAM and DCAM was TPG semantics.... Cheers, RickO

    not to criticize the coin above by CommemKing but it looks like the picture was taken with diffused lighting and then enhanced with a white balance change. MadMarty and Russ had used it, we nicknamed it the "lampshade effect" because that was what diffused the light.

    it seems to now be employed by R&I Coins.

    haha @Keets if you look close at some of mine you get a picture of me in the image. I just get to lazy to pull out the photobox. Been using natural light lately :)

    this one's in a set I've had for awhile. there's some haze and a little weakness on the reverse tail feathers but overall the frost is heavy and the mirrors are pretty good. Half-Dollars from 1970 tend to come nice, it seems that the Mint employees were close to figuring out how to prep the dies for Deep Cameo coins.
