Strange listing on eBay.

BruceSBruceS Posts: 1,356 ✭✭✭✭✭

Do you think these bidders believe they are getting the coin pictured?
I had to read it twice before I realised its a picture of a coin. I never seen these before. Not knocking the seller, but really. Are people buying photos of coins now?

Unusual item. I might go a twenty. At $130 though.

That is indeed a rare sample slab and will go for a significant amount.

There are likely only a few in existence.

I think the listing is fairly clear that it is a photo inside the slab, but one never knows with some eBay bidders.

It's very cool that it's for sale and also on SampleSlabs.com! I'm very curious to see how high it goes.

  • derrybderryb Posts: 37,632 ✭✭✭✭✭

but he listed it in the seated liberty coin category. This will confuse inexperienced buyers.

Here are the images for posterity.

Imagine if someone thought they were getting the real coin for $130?

    Here's the description from SampleSlabs.com:

    http://www.sampleslabs.com/hallmark.html

Hallmark 1: Now here is a neat one! I featured this on the front page of the site since it is so interesting and rare. This sample is pedigreed to the 1988 Norweb III sale and features Lot #3808, an awesomely toned 1859 Seated Liberty Dollar. The coin is not in this sample slab of course and is actually a paper photocopy of both sides. To make sure people understood it was a sample and not the real thing, Hallmark included the inscription “Photo of Sample Coin” in black ink on the front of the photocopy. They must have used glue to hold each side in place since the picture does not slide around. I have only seen 2 of these examples and I doubt many still exist.

That’s a good point. However, where should one list this as eBay has no collectible slab category?

  • rickoricko Posts: 98,724 ✭✭✭✭✭

Well that is a new one..... Listing gone now.... Perhaps a slab collector would want it... I hope no one was scammed.... Cheers, RickO

Strange that it's gone. Wonder if it was reported as being classified incorrectly?

Good to know that it's ex-Cameron Kiefer.

Did someone here buy it? maybe they did a deal off of eBay.

Possible, but let's wait for confirmation. I've purchased from @MrD before and he's always a pleasure to do business with.

Yes it’s a picture that Hallmark used to advertise their slab.

Ebay took down the listing and when I called them they couldn't give me an answer why. Will try to relist as soon as I can. If anyone has any ideas I would love to hear them.

One possibility is that enough people reported it that eBay automatically took it down (which is odd to me as fakes stay up longer and this listing didn’t seem to violate any rules).

Over/under at $1,000 for this slab?

I'll go under, but just barely (my guess is around $925).

    What do you all think?

Nice that it went for that much. Is that a record for a Hallmark sample?

What do you mean? This is a sample slab with a photo of a coin (no actual coin inside). It is very scarce, so the price was in line with what the top sample collectors were willing to bid.

My guess would be yes. The only other Hallmark samples that I have seen sell are the proof nickel ones. Those usually go for $100-$200.
