We've seen some amazing So Called Dollars recently. How about some of their bigger brothers?

We are like children who look at print and see a serpent in the last letter but one, and a sword in the last.

Very nice examples.
This medal was awarded to U.S. Grant for his military leadership during the Civil War, in general and his big victory at Vicksburg, Mississippi in particular. The medal that went to Grant was in solid gold. As you can see it was quite large.
Here is photo of gold Grant medal, which I think is in the Smithsonian collection.
Very impressive specimens.... All of them.... @BillJones... All references to the gold medal say 'over a pound' of gold... is there a specific weight available? Cheers, RickO
All it says on the Smithsonian site is "well over a pound of gold."
It's not US, but here's an example of what is generally considered the first portrait medal of the Italian Renaissance and the work that birthed the art form. This medal portrays the penultimate emperor of the Byzantine empire, John VIII Palaeologus, and was created c. 1439 by the Italian painter Antonio di Puccio Pisano, called Pisanello. This lead example weighs over a pound:
