I was thinking the same thing.
I agree...the portrait is good, but the stars are ridiculous, and render the coin a head-scratcher.
@KollectorKing - That's pretty bad, but probably actually a candidate for "ugliest coin of 1878." LOL, based on your title, I assumed that this was another "look how pathetic the US Mint has gotten" thread.

This is a perfect example of why the Mint needs to do away with the laser enhanced frost. The machine can't even stay in the lines. It's so bad it makes her look like she has really bad acne, just look at the profile of some of those pimples!!
Heck the preetest so far is the Morgan.
Yep, I hope the laser frosting goes away soon.. I hate the look of the newer proof gold eagles.
