Based on the coin being graded BN, I think it might have looked like that originally.
I think it might have been a 'mercy' grading based on the cert numbers that followed it.
Someone out there considers it a work of art, people who live in spam colored houses, who wear leisure suits and other tacky tastes. "Thomas Kinkade", need I say more?
What does BN stand for? What does the reverse look like? What makes someone want to grade this? Looks like soot. This graded between uncirculated and choice uncirculated.
What everyone is missing is the classic item description.
Here is a snippet from the listing:
"NOT ACCEPTABLE AS PAYMENT: Foreign currency, stamps, livestock or other animals, small children or ex-wives, or any other weird stuff I have been sent from time to time."
This is a great example of why ALL coins should be TrueView graded....even at the additional cost. I cannot believe our hosts would straight grade this coin. But this coin was definitely "gassed" after slabbing.
That coin has not been gassed.... it was that way prior to slabbing and was slabbed to take advantage of premiums for tarnished coins - especially available from the inexperienced collector. That is why the description of 'porthole' tarnish was assigned.... Totally ridiculous.... Cheers, RickO
It probably did not look like that when it went into the holder. These copper coated zinc cents are like a snowball. They can “melt” at the drop of hat given the wrong type of storage.
At any rate the person who spent the money to put that coin into a holder, even if it was done at the bulk economy rates, did a dumb thing.
Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?
It's a recent slab, so it didn't have a ton of time to change. It appears to have been part of a dealer modern bulk order. I sampled the next 100 or so certs on the verification page, and all those I checked came up as Lincoln memorial cents. It doesn't look like it was filling out the 100 coin minimum, so maybe there was alcohol and/or a bet involved in making it part of the submission.

What exactly is NET GRADING? Why is it used?
This is a question for Insider2 who can give you a lengthy answer, full of philosophical musings and angst.
My talk is tonight. They are going to be mad when they find out that I changed the topic! Besides the club's refreshments, I'm bringing lots of chocolate candy bars to try and calm them down.
The other listings of the seller are altogether conventional, don't include the other odd submissions. There are more than a few folks out there who aren't playing with a full deck - Occam's razor.

Ugh! Beauty is in the eye if the holder of the coin...bad lighting perhaps?

Geez. Come on. ED
Yes it bothers me. It bothers me even more that someone submitted something like this.
Come on...Changed in the slab. @WingedLiberty1957, IMO, you deserve to have a few "days off" for even posting this.
Yea, garbage.

What a joke!
C'mon man.
Get with it. The coin in question is a POS. Everyone knows it.
But IF the coin was graded properly, it has a value of less than $1 per the PCGS price guide.
I am moving on to more important coins and topics.

Could easily be an in-the-slab gassing/toning experiment gone bad.
How'd you find it?
In the market for a 1985 cent in 62?

looks like PMD?
What bothers me slightly more is that someone paid to have a 1985 cent graded...
Yes agree with the others that it turned in the slab.
professionally graded pocket change
It's listed for sale at $27.99

Don’t understand grading it at all with the cost to do it?
Looked in my box of 20 and there it was!

Are you suggesting someone took a PCGS MS62 BN modern cent and gassed it?

Maybe it is a good thing that coin is slabbed.
The slab will keep the pathogens inside.
only a mother would love it......
Maybe it's in a Registry Set titled "Rainbows on Uranus" owned by a Proctologist?

I agree with the post above. The color class assigned (BN) says it looked this way when it was slabbed.

This is frustrating because I've sent WAY better Lincolns in that were bagged. Lol, pitchforks!!

Well, perhaps our hosts decided to make some money off the fool who submitted the coin. Glad I own CLCT stock (up 207% for me)
Seriously, it shouldn't have gotten slabbed.
