@CWT1863, welcome to the Forum.
I am a Life Member of the Civil War Token Society and among other items collect Detroit Civil War tokens. I started researching and collecting the Detroit CWTs after learning that my great-great grandfather, Wm. Perkins, Jr. of Detroit issued two of these tokens, one for the Perkins Hotel, and another for his grocery & provision store.
Here is the Wm. Perkins, Jr. Grocery & Provision Store token struck on a copper-nickel planchet. Called R-9 in the sale, this is the only example I've seen or heard of in over 25 years. I purchased this in the April 2012 Heritage Auction of the Cliff Temple collection of Michigan CWTs. Cliff Temple had owned it since 1946! I also have the copper-nickel strike for the Perkins Hotel which I purchased a long time ago from the late Steve Tanenbaum. Both of these CN strikes are dated 1864.
As a side note, I cataloged the Detroit CWTs in this Heritage April 2012 Signature Auction.

@CWT1863...Welcome aboard.... Lots of knowledge here and good times....Cheers, RickO
@danni69 ...Welcome aboard. That could be an amazing find. I suggest you take it to PCGS for authentication. If so, you have truly the find of a lifetime.... Cheers, RickO
@ricko... Tell me about it! When i was about 12 years old I started looking for one and its really strange because I never doubted the fact I just knew I would find it. I did come across some fake ones, the steel dipped and was so upset over it but i never gave up
Welcome to the forum. I've studied Civil War tokens a bit, more from a reading perspective than actively collecting them (though I do own a few). I've written about them; also published Q. David Bowers's recent book on the subject (A Guide Book of Civil War Tokens); and wrote the preface to the Token and Medal Society Guide to U.S. Shell Cards 1867-1880. If you don't already belong to the Civil War Token Society and/or the Token and Medal Society, I highly recommend membership in both!

Thank you everyone for the warm welcome!
@Dentuck Thank you so much! I am already a member of both the CWTS and TAMS and really enjoy being apart of these organizations.
@WDP Thank you for sharing the pictures of your tokens! That is amazing that your great-great grandfather actually issued Civil War Store Cards. So cool!

I agree, let them authenticate it. If its real, you will have a fantastic coin.

@1Mike1 @ricko...Well I took my coin to be authenticated and it was the most awful experience, the first gentleman did a series of checks and when they checked out he looked at me with huge eyes and said i'm going to get the owner. Well he was already looking at me like i was a peasant who did not deserve his time. He never smiled or showed anything but an attitude, like there is no way you have this coin and spoke as if i was beneath him. He examined it for a very long time and even got another man. That man didn't even look at it for a second with no magnification and tossed it to me and said we are gonna say its fake! that's when the first gentleman spoke up and said if i was you id get a second opinion for peace of mind! he clearly disagreed. i asked were they 100% positive they thought it to be fake? He said, "its in my opinion." I was a bit thrown off that they never mentioned anything about copper/bronze, just copper/zinc. Well now i'm discouraged and they said it was too nice!
Very nice to see young blood on the board, Welcome post a lot of pic we love pic.
Hoard the keys.
Send it to PCGS.

Greetings.
@danni69 .... First of all, do not get discouraged. While I would be amazed if your coin is the real thing, it could be. All I have seen is the picture, and such a coin must be authenticated in hand. I do not know who you took it to for authentication, however, there are real experts available. I highly recommend you send it to PCGS (join the group, there is no rush) or contact Fred Weinberg (here on the forum) and send it to him. Be prepared that it could indeed be a counterfeit....however, until you have it from a major authenticating source, there is hope. Keep us advised, and I certainly hope you found the real thing. Cheers, RickO
Welcome, CWT1863! I like the "Little Monitor"tokens.
Welcome aboard @CWT1863, I am a retired Heritage cataloger and cataloged many U.S. coins for them in 12 years, as well as a ton of tokens and medals back in the days when Harvey Gamer was head of the Tokens and Medals sales. I have been a part- and full-time dealer for many years. We are glad to have you here!
Kind regards,
George
