Bust or a WOW for this $389 1891 CC Morgan? *ended in Happy ending......

I love the clean satiny look, minimal chatters and clear sharp feathers although I am not sure if there is trace of "cleaning".
The seller said it is hard to find this key date Morgan at this quality. Paid $389
I am planning to send it to PCGS for grading but it depends on your opinions....
Thank you!

Hard to tell from the pictures...which make it look washed out.
From those pics it looks 58. Post some more when you get it
Collector, occasional seller
Send it back. It's not a wow.
The combination of the washed out luster, dirt in the denticles, and significant scuffs would lead me to predict the coin would come back in a genuine holder as AU Details - Cleaned.

It looks cleaned. I'm seeing scratches.

Looks AU to me; which might make it a "WOW, you actually bought that?" kind of coin.

Pcgs price guide says an 1891-CC in AU-58 is a $350 coin. Your coin looks dipped and is probably AU. It would have to grade 62 or better before it would be a wow for what you paid plus grading fees. I would return it and buy a graded one for about what you gave for this one.
AU over dipped and probably cleaned too.
Overdipped, typical with Morgans. And I have seen a lot of coins come back in details holders that look ok, those that looked AU58 come back as "Unc. details" from NGC. That''s one positive you may get.
I would send it back. You can find something better.
You have a rare VAM there. It's the far date spitting eagle VAM 7! If you can get it in a straight graded BU or high AU I would keep it.
If you send it to PCGS pay for them to label attribute it and put VAM 7 on the form
What do you mean by "dip"?
What do you mean by "bought that kind of coin?" I though this is a beautiful coin not knowing much about anything else. Please share your expertise. Mahalo
Suggest you purchase only certified coins on eBay, unless you know how to grade raw ones. Lots of books available for your learning curve.
It does look over dipped but maybe it's just your photo technique. Are the fields that cloudy in hand?
I don't have it in my hand as yet; it on the way to HI. The field looks so attractively "innocent" though....
Yea, 'innocent' as Bernie Madoff.
Seriously, it's an OK coin.....au58 and probably dipped but that's OK too.

A rare VAM may change it's desirability. What is the VAM 7 worth if a cleaned AU (a "worst case" scenario).

Should I feel more comfortable with it IF it turns up to have the cartwheel effect? Meaning not a dipped coin?
Keep it. Don't buy coins, then get opinions on whether to keep them after you buy. Make your decision before hand. It is costly and annoying to dealers to have people buy them, then try to figure out after they buy it if they hit a home run or not.
I'd be happy to keep it if it is a genuine and not an altered or cleaned coin. The standard bar for any seller isn't it? I am NOT in this hobby to make $$$
It's not a rare VAM. Spitting eagles are not at all rare. JMHO.

I believe this seller also had an 1890cc with the same "look". It's been messed with, pass.

I'm not sure on values as its not one I actively seek out personally but it does bring a premium. Perhaps one of the 3 or 4 people who discovered it (yes, really) @messydesk can give some insight.
I am with the send it back crowd. Maybe include a pineapple to commemorate the voyage.
We should wait until better images are available.
From those pics, it's not looking too good PF.
I agree that it is likely a cleaned AU. It may still straight grade AU58 as most AU Morgans I see have been cleaned (some obviously so). That said, it isn't worth the money and you should return it (unless it looks significantly better in hand, in which case post additional pictures here).
What are your collecting goals? That's a lot of money to spend on a raw Morgan, especially if you aren't confident of your grading skills. I don't really see the point of owning a 91-CC unless you are trying to complete a full set. It isn't a box of 20 type coin either.
All of the high spots on the devices seemed to be rubbed, one of those so-called 'sliders' As far as cleaning goes, not sure.

I collect what looks beautiful to my eye besides working on "do & don't'; which most if not all of you would say "LOLO" in Hawaiian.
One might wonder, if it’s a nice coin, why the seller didn’t have it graded?
Or did they, and didn’t like the result?
very wise perspective
Many very nice coins are simply not worth grading. I don't know abou this coin, but if it is an obvious AU with no chance of being better and no chance of being worse, it would be silly to spend $30 to have it graded just so someone can verify what everyone knows just from looking at it. Same is true if it is an obvious 60/61 with no chance to 63.
That said, that coin is only a "Wow" if it is Unc. Doesn't quite look like a solid UNC, but the picture is horrible.
All comments reflect the opinion of the author, even when irrefutably accurate.
I noticed a 'slight' wagon wheel effect at 1 O'clock and at 7 o'clock on the obverse, so the coin does possess some modicum of luster.

This coin 'looks' as if it has been dipped... there are some dirt residues in the denticles. The picture does not show an abrasive cleaning, but there certainly is rub on the high points. There could be some remaining luster, but difficult to tell from the picture. You paid a bit of a premium for this coin and I am not sure the VAM will justify that price. This coin is 'probably' what we call an 'education' coin... you will learn from this experience. Cheers, RickO
Here is a MS61 ask yourself how it compares to this. Forget date. If you think it has more rub and other perhaps return.

. Scratch near neck on last picture is on holder not coin. Compare and see how you feel. It’s a good year but if your not sure I would return
And a 1884 cc ms62PQ

Dear Kathy, I can tell the difference between natural satin field VS bright white cleaned one.
Thank you everyone.

its a WOW (how can you roll the dice for that much and not have any idea how it will grade or if you spent to much)
to me the coin looks like it has been dipped to much, but it could be the pictures - have you looked at the pictures in coinfacts?

I decided to go ahead purchase the sure thing. I hope you'll all agree with this one.
What a learning process of this tread alone. Thank you.
Obverse. I am HAAPY with this purchase.

Are you still getting the VAM 7??
I started to see the difference and what to look for next time. This is a beautiful MS64 graded by PCGS and I feel very comfortable having it as part of my long term collection.
The VAM varieties is another subject I am so far remote from. I may get burnt a time or two before learning the trade.
I feel so grateful for the forum member; provided me with an opportunity seldom available to any novice collector.
But you're still getting it in hand so you can post more pics of it right?
No. Seller decided to cancel the order due to the uncertainty on their part when asked if the coin has been cleaned.
your new purchase is very nice
my personal preference is satiny rather than frosty
when I started buying stuff, I liked white stuff - I did not know at the time but they all had been harshly cleaned stripping all luster
Much better choice in my opinion! (PCGS's too).

Thank you Bob! Coming from someone with 18K + posts; it means a lot!
I'm sure that one cost a "bit more" change but it will be worth it in the long run! I've never owned a 91cc in 64.....you one upped me!
Be well,
bob
Dipped for sure, but still has most of the diagnostics for a vam7... I'm not seeing the die polish lines in Liberty's ear... buT the die crack between U and M and the spike on the E in Liberty is there. Is that a gouge or a real "spit"...

VAM 7 is the only far date 91cc.
Ah... got it. I'm sort of a neophyte with VAMs... not my usual collecting cup of tea...
