Kind of puts things in perspective...

I know that every now and then we post about how expensive/inexpensive something is. This one just sold and it kind of puts things in perspective (or WILDLY blows it out of perspective)...

Let's just say, if I had $450,000,000 million (plus I would assume you'd have to add sales tax) I could think of better ways to spend it. In any case, it's the buyer's money to spend as he/she sees fit.

A lot of people (especially non-collectors) say the same thing about our purchases of trophy coins. As time goes on, I am starting to believe more and more that they are right.

Right after I posted the first post, I decided to add a caveat final sentence, but you had already beat me to the post before I could edit it.

Billionaires gotta spend chump change somehow.

Only DaVinci painting to be privately owned. The new owner will make moon money when the painting sells again.

DaVinci was a mind blower......and that certainly is a beautiful painting......
IIRC the guy invented the helicopter and the military tank.....Long before they would come to be......

Many years ago I was told it was gauche to shove your bank book in someone's face, hence these purchases.

Sometimes you just gotta decide to bid what it takes. Been there, done that

Think about it, it has to be one of maybe 200 people in the world that can drop half a billion on a wall hanging.

It's just mind blowing. Imo. Even if I had that type of scratch, i would hope I would do something good with that money, like the Gates foundation or even Buffett.

So do we know who bought it? Do we think it was an American or a prince in Dubai, Saudi Maybe? Or an investment firm thinking a quick flip?

Leonardo da Vinci had a profound impact on the world in both art and science. To own an art work, journal, or drawing by him seems so surreal to me - I'm hardly surprised at the price.

In 1994, Bill Gates bought the The Leicester Codex for 30 million - what would it be worth today?

How much would someone pay for this drawing?

People are entitled to spend their money in any way they choose. We may speculate on how such funds should or could be spent, however, it is not ours to spend. If such an expenditure brings pleasure to one who has the disposable income at hand, so be it. I hope it brings pleasure to the new owner. Cheers, RickO

Actually, if you had "$450,000,000 million" you would have 450 TRILLION dollars. And there is no way you could think of enough ways to spend it. (Although you could, for example, pay off the U.S. National Debt about 20+ times over.)

Still waiting for that kind of money to "trickle-down" to me. Maybe it will now, if Congress passes its proposed new tax plan................. ;)

Like Will Rogers (allegedly?) said, "A million here, a million there, pretty soon it adds up to some real money."

I have always tended to be overly literal-minded ... it makes for a great editor and proofreader but a lousy way to make friends. o:)

    Kind regards,

Interesting video - very different ambience than say a Ha or Stacks auction. My wardrobe of t-shirts, shorts and patagonia would certainly not be allowed.......... And all of those bidders standing in the corner on phones with their clients, don't see that at a coin auctions these days. We need more players I guess.

    Best, SH

I watched that this morning and thought to myself I wonder what they all thought they would pay prior to the Auction going live, and does the buyer still feel like a winner today. His money his choice but Wow.

    Best place to buy !

I suppose that is true at a coin auction but in this venue that is hardly nuclear. More like pocket change
