New Purchase- 1799 $1

jwittenjwitten Posts: 5,246 ✭✭✭✭✭

I am mainly a gold guy. And by mainly I mean ONLY gold. However, I've been wanting to pick up a coin from the 1700's, and ended up getting this one. I would love opinions from the experts on these. Please be gentle, as I have no idea if I got ripped, or did ok, etc. I liked the looks of it though, and it was in my budget. Without looking up the sale, what are your thoughts on grade, decent price, variety, etc? Thanks!

VG-Fine. Due to the vintage the graders probably overlooked the neck scratches/ $1000 should be about right.

Without looking at resource materials, I'd say F12. Decent piece for sure. Enjoy it!

Looks like it may have been ever so gently cleaned with baking soda and water back in the 60's. A charming coin and well worth 1K I'd think.

I like it and also hope to get one of those someday. I think I'd prefer one a tad darker.

I like it, and there aren't many in this grade range that don't have serious problems.

If you're looking for others, I recommend being pretty sensitive to rim issues.

Id say fine and about a $1300 Coin, (if its straght graded) I agree with the early cleaning comment. But hey, if you were 200 + years old.... , I like it.

I think you did good! Nice coin!

Thanks for the comments! It is graded VG-8, and I paid $1,150, but also had 8% ebay bucks promo, so will be getting some cash back ($92) to save on a future coin. What's everyone's thoughts on the grade? Would it cross to PCGS?

  • BruceSBruceS Posts: 1,356 ✭✭✭✭✭

Yes I think it would cross. I would have a hard time deciding if to send it in raw or not, Its on the line in between grade levels imo.

You did ok, I would leave her as is.
Probably s VG10/10+ that took a hit for the rim chinks.

  • sarikanairsarikanair Posts: 154 ✭✭✭

This looks like a fine coin to own as a collector. Though not too rare, it seems that the coin was cleaned. Nevertheless, you got a decent coin for 1k.

I sold one of those with a little more originality graded a 10 for a little under a thousand. Great coins.

  • thebeavthebeav Posts: 3,954 ✭✭✭✭✭

I was going to say that they probably called it a fine, but I really like it as a very good. That doesn't sound like a lot of money. Weren't they worth close to this 30 years ago ?

  • joebb21joebb21 Posts: 4,777 ✭✭✭✭✭

I grade it a vg 10. $1150 is very fair overall. Should cross as such. Enjoy!

I definitely like it. Great even wear on a 200+ yr old coin with no real damage, gotta love that. I would send it to PCGS at "Cross at any grade." It will cross at VG8 IMO. Nice coin :)

I like it. It's also a great coin to engage non-collectors to pique their interest!

Thanks guys! I really like the small eagle coins too, but those seem PRICEY! What would be a decent price to pay for a similar condition $1 small eagle, any date?

  • ms71ms71 Posts: 1,586 ✭✭✭✭✭

I would expect it to cross. The obverse is a solid F15, the reverse brings the overall down to a VG.

@jwitten.....I like the coin... and I am also attracted to the '17XX' date coins. One question... on the reverse, looking at the stars...the extreme left star seems totally different than the others (small and thin compared to 'heavy'). I did not see any like that in the Mega book.... Is there any information on this?? Cheers, RickO

@1630Boston ...Thanks.... I had only looked at the Mega Red.... so now I just need the backstory... someone must have researched this anomaly. Cheers, RickO

My mistake, the OP's coin is "7x6 stars ?
But the weak star on the reverse is similar I think

I like the coin. So many of these 200 year old coins have problems. I think you did good.

To answer your question, a small eagle in VG8 is going to cost double what this one did.

  • morgansforevermorgansforever Posts: 8,492 ✭✭✭✭✭

I also like this date, don't know why though, perhaps it's because the end of a century?

Don't know if anyone has mentioned the die marriage
but I believe it is a B-12 BB-160. If i'm correct the obv
die was used to only strike BB-160, but the rev die struck
    BB-158, 159, 158 again, 160 & 161. The dies were lapped
quit a bit resulting in the smaller star under cloud
one, the near erasing of rev star 10 and the rev lack of
berries. The rev U has a damaged left upright.
It's odd that with all this lapping the OP coin does not show
any die cracks that developed at die states II and III and
    IV primarily on the obverse.

I like more layers of age, classic soap bath done long ago. Still better than the one I don’t have. Very cool coin
