A new MS67 1885 Liberty Nickel showed up in the pops
I noticed a new MS67 1885 Liberty Nickel showed up in the pops. This is now a pop 4 coin.
You can view the coin here https://pcgs.com/cert/34478196
Given the distinct die crack through the date, I looked at the images from the MS66+ coins, and found it was graded MS66+ at least 4 times. While these numbers are no longer in the database, you can find the images in coin facts by directly linking to them.

So persistence does seem to pay off.
Still waiting for the price guide to reflect the last sale, as well as an increase in pops.

PCGS price guide is $170K; one sold this year for $43K. https://coins.ha.com/itm/a/1261-16657.s
The spot throws me.............but it is a nice nickel
Steve
At least based on those photos I'm not seeing superior "eye appeal" even as a MS66.
Persistance + the "right" submitter does pay off.
Those HA jumbo Cartoon Pics which KK posted I feel may have really hurt the auction price.
As they are supersaturated showing spots and streaks not seen on the actual coin in the slab shots.
Those are Run Forest Run type photos and the coin IMHO would have yielded more without them.
The new coin looks like a solid ms66+ to me.
The Heritage images are not the newly graded coin.
On the new one just graded they should have conserved that green PVC contamination spot which now otherwise could grow.
Nice coin..... the images seem to be spotty, but that may be mostly magnification.... Cheers, RickO
Whatever happened to the good old days when coins with PVC were body bagged? It is bad enough to straight grade, but to freshly straight grade at MS67 no less.
This post is an example why I have given up collecting the series, after ten years. I used to collect them in business strike MS 66. Two or three years ago, pops exploded, resulting in nice for the grade coins with not so nice for the grade coins (I'm trying to be polite) in the same holder, with prices for such coins dropping like a stone. I'm sure glad I didn't spend buku bucks for a 12 S, a 12 D, an 1896, 1885 or 1886 in this grade back in the day.
TDN has discussed this at length with respect to other denominations of coinage. It's almost like the pre TPG days, with the seller saying the coin is a strong 6, and the buyer telling him that the coin is really a 5, or is marginal for the MS 66 grade, and makes a a low end offer.
