logger7logger7 Posts: 9,075 ✭✭✭✭✭

Numismatic crime sent out two broadcasts in the last week, one a notice of certified coins stolen in the mail then another of them just showing up at a flea market:

Coins Show Up in Stoneham, MA Area

On November 8, 2017 the Numismatic Crime Information Center sent out an alert regarding a Lost/Stolen UPS package which had been sent to Watertown, MA. The package contained a large number of slabbed Walking half dollars. On November 11, 2017 NCIC received a call from a Massachusetts dealer advising that he had bought six of the half dollars that was listed on the alert from a flea market in the Stoneham, MA area.

The following coins have been recovered.

1935 Walker PCGS MS66 CAC PQ last four serial 0027
1937 Walker PCGS MS66 CAC Dakota last four serial 3757
1938 Walker PCGS MS66 last four serial 3842
1942D Walker PCGS MS66 CAC PQ last four serial 2253
1945S Walker PCGS MS65 PQ last four serial 3681
1947 Walker PCGS MS67 OGH PQ last four serial 1425

Dealers in Massachusetts should be on the watch for additional coins that may be sold in the area. This is an on-going investigation.

Great news on the partial recovery... and hopefully it will lead to the perps and perhaps the rest of the coins. Cheers, RickO

Was wondering say your a collector and you purchased one or more of the coins and found out later they are stolen guess you have to return item coin and out money paid and the same applies to the dealer as well.

Sometime I wonder if Fed-Ex would be more secure than USPS or UPS? Inside job perhaps?

Fedex will not insure your coins.....you'd need private insurance. USPS will insure them.

I sure wish I could catch the ones who stole the coins and pull a Clint Eastwood on them! Hard core justice I guess I need to learn more about sending coins abroad.

I question the fact that coins of this quality show up at a flee market?

Someone knows something that will lead to finding the person took them in the first place.

I wouldn’t if I were you. I’ve sold $1000s in coins at the local flea market, as well as gold and silver jewelry. It’s not that uncommon.

Please clarify. UPS is United Parcel Service.

USPS is the United States Postal Service.

We’re these coins being shipped from CAC? We’re thy being shipped to a POB or street address? Wasn’ there a sig required to receive them? Where in the shipment process did the loss occur? Was there something about the label or package which would have encouraged a thief? How is your insurance claim going?

If they went to a flea market it’s possible someone who knew about cac and their value could have bought them for chump change, cracked them out to disrupt any audit trail, and either in the submission pipeline, or waiting to submit piecemeal at a later date. Hope owner was insured, what a devastating loss.

Correct. You can try to claim the money from the person from whom you bought them who will try to claim them from the person from whom he bought them. In the end, the person who has to make restitution would be the one going to jail, so good luck with that. If you bought them from a reputable dealer, he/she would probably compensate you. But it's a mess.

Agreed. And you also have small coin shops that will sometimes set up at flea markets. There are some MAJOR "flea markets" that are bigger than a lot of local coin shows.

Just about everything stolen shows up “for sale” somewhere. And then there’s that crime about receiving stolen property. That’s why it’s “hot”, see ?

  • keetskeets Posts: 25,351 ✭✭✭✭✭

the receiving stolen property card can be played to compel someone to cooperate, but I don't think it gets used just because you have a stolen item.

I would agree with what Pat said, these aren't typical for a Flea Market and really, not even for a small 20-30 table Coin Show like what I attended yesterday. seeing this group at the latter would be nice, seeing them at the former would be suspicious. what I can't wrap my head around is someone having a package like this delivered to where it won't be handed to the owner or their representative.
