I'm in, I would suggest not submitting coins received as part of a promotional mailing campaign :)

Tip: People collect these things so don't throw it away and don't remove the cent!

Well that's good to know - I've removed countless cents and even dollar bills from mass marketing mail received. Guess I'll start saving them. Thanks for your tip!!!!

When grading Walking Liberty half dollars, check for wear on the reverse before the obverse. The first point of light wear appears on the eagle's breast feathers and can be easily spotted if tilted under good lighting.

The first point of wear on a Buffalo nickel is on the buffalo's hip.

The best way to grade twenty-cent pieces is first to consider the wear pattern of the reverse. The wear pattern (and strike) is more uniform on the reverse as compared with the obverse. The use of letters in LIBERTY on the shield as the primary determinant of wear is an antiquated method of grading this series.

Be very patient when working on your coin sets, be it type or a series, registry or raw. It's more fun to look at an incomplete set filled with attractive, eye-appealing coins over a complete set with scrubbed out or just plain ugly coins.

One feature peculiar to San Francisco minted cents is that during the 1940s and 1950s they were weakly struck, but when minting resumed in 1968 the strikes were a lot deeper than before - so much so that they stick out when you are searching rolled cents. They exhibit a deeper strike, deeper fields and higher rims than their contemporaries from Denver or Philly.

Are hairlines always the cause of a cleaning attempt?
Or could these occur naturally during the minting process?

@YQQ said: "Are hairlines always the cause of a cleaning attempt? Or could these occur naturally during the minting process?"

There are two marks on coins that many call hairlines. In numismatics, a hairline is a very, very, thin line (thinner than a human hair) on a coins surface. Often the only way to see them is to tip the coin and rotate it into a certain orientation to the light. Any very, very, tiny scratches (hairlines) on a die will usually produce very, very tiny raised "die polish" on a coins surface. Many folks incorrectly call these tiny raised polish marks hairlines. It can be confusing. True hairlines happen to a coin after it is struck. They can occur in many ways including wiping a coin at the mint while processing it (probably rare)!

At one time, I thought that every coin with hairlines was cleaned. Not so. After a coin leaves the Mint, it can become hairlined. Take a look at some modern Proof Silver Eagles. Random hairlines are usually due to some form of mishandling. When the hairlines are dense, parallel, and copious it usually indicates cleaning.

Note that the ANA Grading Guide says that a coin can have "continuous hairlining" over its entire surface and still be straight graded as low MS.

Before I announce the winners I will be changing future giveaways! In my first giveaway that many here entered, the name of a member who collects counterfeits was picked and to keep the giveaway looking "honest," we picked another winner.

In this contest I left all the previous names in the pot. As a result, some members had 4 chances to win while others had 3, 2, or 1. Well, in the future, there will only be one chance for each member BECAUSE...

First winner is: @Coin4Sale He gets first choice of the three prizes. PM me with your address.

Second Pick was: @1630Boston Yikes! We have PM'ed each other before and this would look "fishy" so he get's the second choice.

Since this result "smelled" to me, they drew another name: Boston1630! NO WAYI What are the chances as the slips are really mixed good. I think he had 4 entries in the pot.

Anyway, we drew another name and that winner is: @KellenCoin He get's whatever piece the others don't pick.

All please PM me with an address.

Having contests is easy for me; but getting the prizes shipped is very difficult. I'll have another soon as I have lots of stuff to give away as long as I can link the contest to "numismatic education."

I have so many contests lined up and so many coins to give away that I could run one-a-day. The problem is that running a contest is easy, getting to time to pack, and mail the prizes is very difficult! If the contests were not so much fun, I should not do them. Thankfully, everyone has been patient <3 with my procrastination!
