Where are all the 2009 cents?

With more than 2 billion 2009 cents minted you would think they would be more prevalent in pocket change but I almost never see them. I recently searched a bunch of boxes of cents and only found a couple. In 2009 I stumbled on a source for boxes of 2009's and made some good money selling them on ebay, I seem to recall they were selling for about $200 a box at the peak, when they stopped selling at such a premium I tucked a few away and then they disappeared from the banks. Where do you think they are all hiding?

There is your answer.
I search a few rolls of cents now and then and I have seen less than a half dozen since they were issued.
Someday they will start appearing in circulation when the people hoarding them realize they will never be worth much.
The year 2009 was a recession year when few new coins were needed. My perception was that a lot of them were never issued. Perhaps the government still has them? That makes no sense give the cost of making cents, but government officials are not always logical.
They're sitting in a secret underground vault along with all the steel cents, bicentennial quarters and Susan B. Anthony dollars.

Hoarding. The perception is they are all "copper/bronze" and of value someday. Fact is, only the US Mint Annual Sets and Proofs were bronze. All the rest zincolns. Too bad there was no special design to distinguish zincolns from bronzes (other than the S proofs). This was a big mistake on the Mint's behalf. A special mark/finish on the bronzes would have made bronzes instant key dates. Now you can only differentiate by weighing.
I get SBA dollars as vending machine change every week. Maybe you'll see more if you lose the good eating habits
Just estimating here but I think they have minted more than 250 billion cents since 1959 so that would explain part of the reason there were so few in the twenty boxes I searched but I can't believe that there are that many being hoarded... but then again I do have my own little hoard -
You are correct. I also go through many many cents and don't see very many at all.....I'd say they occur with less frequency than Wheat Cents.
The Log Cabin type is really hard to find, as is the Capitol design. They must all be in hoards.
The "Rail-Splitter" is the easiest one for me to find, and it still isn't an easy coin. I would guess 1 coin for maybe 10-12 rolls, if that.
Technically they did as the mint sets from 2005 - 2010 have a satin finish slightly different from the circulation strikes.

In my small sample I was getting about one every five boxes which made me think they must be pretty rare for a modern cent. All of them appeared well circulated with one almost looking like it came out of the ground.
Weren't the Lincoln Coin and Chronicle Sets also bronze?
Lance.
I did not realize the 2009 cents were scarce..... I have a few that I put aside thinking I would check them for varieties.... never have had the time... Cheers, RickO
In that case, all we have to do is wait a few centuries until all the zincolns disintegrate. Then the only 2009 cents left will be the bronzes from the mint sets and proof sets.
We just have to be patient.

Yes, but they were proofs, no different from those in the other proof offerings for that year.

I'm still sitting on a hundred 2009 mint sets.
My weekly roll searching rarely yields 2009 Zincolns. But when I find one it is usually the one where Lincoln is sitting on a log.
Some of the mint sets are toning nicely
It makes perfect sense if no one can find 'em.

I would agree they are being hoarded for no true reason. I have about 30 rolls sitting in a box and not sure why. Such as it is.

You guys are forgetting that the 2009 nickel was extremely short in mintage. So, grabbing an '09 P + D mint set would be a good deal (if mintage numbers are your thing....)
Insert witicism here. [ xxx ]
Yes the 2009 "D" nickel was a hard one to get. I think they sent most of the mintage to Puerto Rico and the dime as well.

There are those people who put aside a few rolls of each 2009 reverse design...and you can count me among them.

I just checked and I have 12 mint wrapped rolls.
I have yet to find a 2009-P or D nickel in circulation.
I try to put up 5 box's of nickels and cents every year, It can be hard at times.

Same here. All in Intercept bags.
I expect that some day each cent will be worth two, maybe three times face value. I could easily make $50 for my effort.
Lance.
Got a box sitting in my closet since 2009. Went through another box and the best I did was a MS66.
I remember when the 2009 nickel was discovered in Puerto Rico and were selling on ebay for about $40 piece. There were a few people from Puerto Rico that were selling them one at the time. I stayed away until the roll price equaled the single price.

We do as collectors Frank. Some day your kid's kids will say why didn't great, great grandpa buy any of them nickels.
We all look at coins differently it's a big mix out there.
Some just want Key's some will pay millions for a coin in the 1700 some will pay crazy money for a MS-70 2017 business strike cent, some will say modern coins but they where all modern coins once just a collector was smart enough to keep them or hold on to them for what ever the reason was.
I look at numbers the less I see of them the more I want them to keep and hold not for today or 5 years from now but generations to come. If I can make $$ on any coin I'm going to do it. That's what opens doors to other coins it's just how it works best for me dumb Type2.

Nah, J/K.
But good luck

Interesting- I don't see too many of the 2009's either. I have two P&D mint wrapped rolls of each for the year. I don't see many of the Jefferson Westward Journey series either so probably nestled away by collectors too?
Well...the other piece of this was the MONSTER forum topic of the Formative "Errors" that silenced about a year ago when they were finally published in the latest edition Cherrypickers Guide and recognized by the TPGs. Those were a great seek and find adventure, and some (of us here) actually made a few bucks. The stigma of a doubled-die variety may still exist. (a shameless attempt at marketing a large inventory, PM me!)
Used to see them in circulation, not much any more. My best guess is that circulated pieces will carry a very small premium and that's about all.
Well - didn't expect this...I pulled one out of the ground metal detecting today. It looked like it had been in the ground for quite a few years.
I went through 10 rolls of Lincolns from the local bank last weekend. Found no 2009's! Usually I find a couple but zero this time.
i have a $100 mint bag for nickels full of 2009 cents from when i was looking for the errors. Now i have rolls and rolls of 2009 errors too.... So much time wasted.
Sell the error's... Make lots of $$$$

You could probably get a couple of dollars a piece for them if you wanted to put them on eBay.
Might be not worth the effort though....
Perhaps you should just sell them in the rolls and be done with them! How many variations did you end up with? Or maybe package up sets of all the variations you found, those might garner some interest.
