Original look to a 100 year old silver coin

I have spent the last few hours window shopping on the internet and looking at coins from the late 19th century to early 20th century and it got me thinking about how many of them have been dipped or messed with. Post a coin with what you would consider to be original from that time frame. For discussion sake, lets consider them to be AU/low MS.

Because there is no consistency with environmental conditions, what you are really looking for is layers of age comprising a skin. A stripping of any sort with go down to one layer and start the process over again.

Here is an older one with a more silvery color but you still get multiple layers of texture and exsposures at different saturations

Here is a good example of how natural tone is often not consistent across the surface as things like oils and other contaminations can alter the rate and process.

You can also see that perfectly original is often not the same as attractive. Focus on eye appealing and go from there

Just got this back from the "grading farm" this week, and made the claim at the time that it seems unmolested by dip to me, based on luster and toning.

Morgans are kind of unique as they were sheltered for 80-90 years in low air bags. They should be compared mentally to rolled Franklin halfs in terms of expected dirt and skin.

That one looks honest enough and appears to spent some time in an album/holder. If dipped it was most likely done right out of the bag a log time agonbefore being put into retail as many were (to freshen them).

The original vrs. dipped out Barber Half's is why there are pretty big swings in the prices they sell for.

The 'environmental life' of a coin can result in a myriad of appearances - from almost mint finish to crusty, dirty and terminal tarnish. Collect what you like.... Cheers, RickO
