Has the mint released a date on this one yet? New design or one stolen from the past? Any predictions on a sellout?
How much would these cost?

    They would have a hard time sourcing plutonium. I think you meant platinum or Palladium.

    The idea of a plutonium coin gives me a slightly warm, tingly feeling.

    Best to review the critical mass concept before you plan on hoarding plutonium.

    Well, the US government used to (still does?) sell reference samples of Pu for $3500/g, so I figure a 1 ozt Pu Eagle would run about $100,000. I'd have to settle for the 1/10 oz, hopefully packaged in a boron-containing box.

    A totally new concept in Eagles ( totally non circulating) might draw in millions of Kids to US Mint products. I'm talking about a totally consumable product that would make everyone happy and silly.

    Life Savers Eagles. Many different flavors. Face value perhaps 5 cents. Issued in a cellophane wrapper.

    "One of the most popular exhibits in the American Museum of Atomic Energy is a "dime irradiator." To date, more than 250,000 dimes have been irradiated, encased in plastic and returned to their owners as souvenirs. The irradiator works as follows: A mixture of radioactive antimony and beryllium is enclosed in a lead container. Gamma rays from the antimony are absorbed by the beryllium atoms and a neutron is expelled by the beryllium atom in the process.  

These neutrons, having no electrical charge, penetrate silver atoms in the dime. Instead of remaining normal silver-109, they become radioactive silver-110. After irradiation, the dime is dropped out through a slot in the lead container and rests momentarily before a Geiger tube so that its radioactivity may be demonstrated. It is then encased in the souvenir container. Radioactive silver, with a half-life of 22 seconds, decays rapidly to cadmium-110 (In 22 seconds, half of the radioactivity in each dime is gone, in another 22 seconds half the remainder goes, and so on until all the silver-110 has become cadmium). Only an exceedingly minute fraction of the silver atoms have been made radioactive."

    Yep... more likely to see a sapphire Eagle before plutonium.....Now there is an idea....Sapphire disks, but instead of the mint pressing them, the Bureau of Engraving would etch them....OK Mint moles.... toss that idea into your brainstorming session....Cheers, RickO

    Wow, atomic dimes, sapphire Eagles, Life Saver Eagles, Latinum Slips!!!! I posted this thread as a parody to our newest Palladium Eagle and what great responses...love the comedy bits! You guys are all pretty creative!!!! I've only been on this Coin Forum for around three months and I'm really glad I discovered it, I'm learning a lot!! Thanks!~

    From Colorado comes rumors of " Shatter " Eagles. Each Shatter Eagle would come with a pound of Lifesaver Eagles. Maybe someone in Colorado would know what this is all about?

    Not without an outside source of nutrons to begin with. Now, say the very center had a small piece of Polonium wrapped in Berylium foil, then, if the weight exeeds 5KG there could be some fireworks.

    BTW, 5KG of PU239 is about the size of a softball, so probably not. But OSHA isn't going to be happy with the workplace safety of this program.
