Yesterday, I was promoted to 'Master Collector' and got my 5th star! So was keets. And ldhair was promoted to Expert Collector 12 hours before us.
To celebrate our promotions, here is my favorite half dollar from my collection. Talk about skin, one of the truly amazing coins from the Newman sale. Please show your coins with thick skins.

I don't think you get a point for every like. There is some kind of formula, but not a 1 for 1 on likes.

Actually, you do. Being the curious sort I've been studying the workings of CU.
We get a point for each like and each agree. We lose a point for spam and abuse. The difficult part is where the other points come from to push a member over the 1001 points needed to become a Master collector.
Example: @spacehayduke CONGRATULATIONS!! has 609 agrees and 149 likes (I don't think LOL count at all until you get one of the badges (100, 250, 500, etc). So he has 758 points from obvious places. 1008 - 758 = 250 points from ???.
Example: @keets CONGRATULATIONS!! has 320 + 400 = 720 points, 1002 - 720 = +282 from ???
I think these (???) come mostly from the badges like years as a member and number of comments. I also believe the quality of your posts and the "action" on any of the discussions you started is a factor. There is also something I've observed that I'll call "discretion of the mods" as some new members have reached a *** status without many points or posts.

I guess I was wrong based on those stats. I guess you do get a point for each like.

Interesting...I have never paid much attention to this stuff but maybe I will going forward. I already have 'liked' a couple of posts based on this posts! i checked my profile and noticed that I have a bunch of badges, mainly anniversary badges. But the one that befuddles me is the 'Combo' badge. I thought I was going to get a free burger and shake based on the icon but evidently not. Not sure what it is for either!

I love you man but I'm gagging on your post. Lucky I can type and don't need to speak. I pay attention so I'm very guilty! Also very insecure (NOT) and curious about how things work. LOL.
Life is a game with winners and losers. There are ways we measure this. Some use happiness, some money, some use possessions, some use Registry Sets, etc. There are ways we recognize their accomplishments. Richest man, Academy Awards, Nobel Prizes, etc. IMO, here on CU the number of stars is a mark of respect. It indicates a willingness to share "good" information. We are lucky to have CU since most of us cannot be around the dealers and collectors who "made it in this business" and share their knowledge and collections directly.

BTW, I consider the "rating game here just that." It is a GAME to figure out and play for the fun of it All the while we "players" (who are not insecure) are helping (we try) others who hope to become like you and I - an opinionated, knowledgeable numismatist. What amuses me the most is when I hear: "I don't really care about...(after achieving it)" and "I just want to give back..." ROTFL to the point of throwing up!
