We have a pick up and delivery service from USPS on many holidays. They are definitely picking up from us today. Although any consignments that arrive today won't be logged in until tomorrow.
I just had the same experience. Not with coins, but I ordered items off Amazon using Amazon Prime, which qualified me for free 2-day shipping. Order came back indicating it would be delivered today. After searching forever for a phone number to actually talk to someone at Amazon, I got thru to someone overseas who had no clue today was a holiday. After much prompting, she agreed that if a holiday & P.O. is closed, then delivery day would be Tuesday.
But Amazon tracking website still showed package as in-transit & expected delivery by 8pm today.
Later, once Amazon notified me of the transit status of the package & the USPS tracking #, I checked there, and saw it listed as a Tuesday 9/5 expected delivery date. Fine, I figured, since the work address I was sending it to was closed today.
Then, updating the status, I saw they had attempted delivery around noon today, but the business was closed. Now a note saying they will attempt re-delivery tomorrow.
Never a clue with the USPS. My success rate with their Certified Mail (not in this case) is that at least 50% of the time they fail to scan at delivery, meaning I never get the confirmation I paid for. I end up having to issue a complaint (useless) and track it's status down with the recipient. ...... But the USPS won't own up to their ineptitude & refund my money in those cases - - just keep promising to "do better going forward"......
I would like an opt-out option for this. A shame to make somebody work on a holiday to deliver packages that won't even be processed until the next business day.
Note: I am a retired cop who worked many a holiday and know what it is like.
I bet I would jump on the opportunity...probably double to triple overtime pay!

I have never received or had delivered a Sunday or holiday delivery, though UPS and Fed Ex will operate on some of the ten recognized federal holidays when usps is not open. Usually you have the option for Sunday or holiday delivery with USPS but it is extra. Fed Ex also offers a cross country same day service.
saw a mini delivery van out and about yesterday.
was in a mall parking lot today and saw another parked.
I saw one in the middle of a snowstorm, on a sunday, and when few others were on the road. it was heading into a apartment complex. the nearest POs are not down that 1 outlet street.
I don't think it matters if address is business or residential. If they deliver packages on holidays, they are going to attempt to do so in either case.

I wonder if the only way to have the tracking go from "out for delivery" to "wait a minute- it's a holiday, and we ain't delivering it today" is to mark it "business closed" along with everything else in that truck.

You might be right, in talking with them just now, they confirmed they did not intend to drop off today, only pick up.
We received mail today in our home mail box. I delivered a Priority Mail package to ship out to our post office today, not open, but mail trucks going in and out. So seems to be activity at some level. Perhaps they are trying to catch up in SE Tejas for the week they were closed? But it also seems they are intent in delivering packages on holidays at least in some locations.

May be an error, but with Amazon running the USPS, every day is now delivery day.

I wish they did. All my items are delivered via UPS, with the last 2, per tracking info, that were never received by the shipping agent
I sent something across country USPS First Class on Thursday and it got delivered Sunday much to my surprise.
Great transactions with oih82w8, JasonGaming, Moose1913.
Priority Express is delivered on Sundays & Holidays. See them in our Apartment complex all the time when walking the dogs.
The Postal Service now delivers packages on Sundays and Holidays to alleviate the bigger volumes they now handle.
It's now a national thing. Locally, I used to deliver obvious looking Christmas packages back in the 1970's on Christmas Day.

Not sure why USPS would attempt to deliver a package that requires a signature to a business that is closed for a federal holiday.

They came back to our office after our call! They said only Hallmark and our firm were open. But clearly USPS were working behind the scenes.
