Picked up a nice new quarter today. 1901 PCGS PF63 with what I think is beautiful toning.

Thoughts?

I like the coin and series...that toning looks a bit funky though. Can you reimage it?

  • crazyhounddogcrazyhounddog Posts: 14,074 ✭✭✭✭✭

Yeah, that's pretty alright. Congratulations on such a beautiful piece.

The bitterness of "Poor Quality" is remembered long after the sweetness of low price is forgotten.

Any tips on phogaphing a rainbow tones proof through a slab? I've yet to fixture out how to capture the rainbow colors. To be the most accurate is just a short video

Gorgeous toning and likely from a NGC no-line fatty prior to its current housing imho. Congrats,

    Forgive the newbie question...
But what is a "NGC no-line fatty" and why was it likely from one of those?

How can you guys see anything through the glare? I can see some blue and pink hues. Try taking a straight on shot without so much light.

Lot's of great toners that are only graded "63. Great eye appeal for a low price. Collecting 63-64 toners can be very rewarding without breaking your bank.

Was that from the Melbourne show?
    Looks nice!
An NGC no-line fatty is one of the first NGC holders - no line as it was a solid flat piece of plastic, a little wider and thicker than future generations.
I guess someone thinks these induced toning, but I haven't heard that before - though the old ANACS holders supposedly did.

Yea it was from the Melbourne show. I thought it was too pretty to say no too. I'd goes very well with my toned seated proofs. Thanks for the heads up about the show in Melbourne

No. You need axial photography for colorful proofs...a technique that allows lighting to be perfectly vertical...as if it were coming from the lens itself.

This can be done with glass and refraction on a raw coin. But not with a slab as it reflects the light. You can only compromise and put up with slab glare, which pretty much spoils the picture.

Fatty's do not tone the coins. PCI slabs did.

    That coin is SWEET!

  • Wabbit2313Wabbit2313 Posts: 7,268 ✭✭✭✭✭

Cracks me up when I see PCI holders that say 100% white.
