If you ever wondered how proof coins got into circulation..

I've now misplaced/accidentally spent 6 proof silver state quarters. 3 Connecticuts, a Utah and 2 Alaskas.

I need to switch to half dollar pocket pieces. After a few months, a circulated proof looks too much like a non-proof clad coin.

May be just me, any modern scratched up proof is an eye sore. I have no problem spending it as long they aren't make of silver.

Someone may have cracked a set for a particular coin and spent the remainders.

I got a silver 06 Nevada state quarter proof in change about 3 years ago. I knew right off that it was silver cuz it was black around the edges and writing and the edge and of course the s mint mark. The condition was about fine to very fine. I just wonder how it circulated so long without being pulled?

I also routinely put proof nickels in circulation because of flawed fields.I always hope some kid finds it and it sets him off on collecting more.Wishful thinking I am sure.

I found a proof quarter in circulation once, a few years ago. Pre-state but I don't remember what year. Want to say 85? I have not gotten in to my collection in a while. I found it about 2012 by the way.

A number of Proof coins were spent during the Great Depression. People needed money, and finding a dealer or collector who was willing to pay more than face value was hard. A coin dealer I knew in the 1970s had an original 1904 Proof set minus the dollar. He told me the story was the dollar had been pulled out of the set and spent during the early 1930s.

I too have received Proof coins in circulation. The last one wax in Orlando during a Summer FUN convention some years ago.

In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?
