Copper 4 the Weekend

DCWDCW Posts: 7,926 ✭✭✭✭✭

I miss these threads, so here goes:
This is a scarce copper piece by Joseph Merriam commisioned by Alfred Robinson circa 1861 "Non Vi Virtute Vici" 28 mm. Baker-13J, Kenney-2. From the Q. David Bowers Collection.

It is said that Mr. Robinson struck 54 in copper and six in silver, though many have undoubtedly been lost over the last 150 years. I have looked in vain for an example for a long time. They just dont come up for sale that often.
Rather than the "Non Vi" Colonial pieces, this is modeled after George Clinton, the subject of the early "Clinton Coppers." He was Governor of New York and Vice President of the United States under Jefferson and Madison.
Thanks for looking and post your copper for the weekend!

Since we haven't seen many CFTW threads lately, I'll give this another nudge TTT.

1837, HT-31, R4 and the scarcest of the obtainable "Illustrious Predecessor" tokens (HT-31 through HT-34). This variety is extremely difficult to locate in problem-free XF or above.

I love the detail in the brick, just a great English Conder Token.

Canal building was a major industry in the late 18th century. The Thames and Severn canal linked the Severn at Wallbridge near Stroud with the Thames near Lechlade. The total length, including a branch to Cirencester, was about 30 miles. The Sapperton Tunnel was nearly two and a half miles in length and an engineering feat..
