    My thoughts? I think that;
    1. It is REQUIRED to be certified by a reputable grading service, like our host, to determine authenticity and to be taken seriously.
    2. start with 1

    With all due respect, how can anyone give an opinion without seeing the obverse?

    Fake.

    From that picture, I have no way to be certain, other than the odds. But given the odds... FAKE, heck the obverse could be a muled pic of Bugs Bunny for all I know.

    It's the new math: 1943 cent + random bronze cent = 1943 bronze cent.

    Send it in. Way too many fakes. One of the diagnostics of a Copper 43 is that under close magnification there will be zinc "flecks" visible on the coin. The dies transfer that from striking thousands of real 1943 steel Cents.

    I would like to know if it weighs correct, and if it passes the magnet test.

    See if it sticks to a magnet. If it doesn't, submit it. If it really is genuine, your friend is leaving a LOT of money on the table by not doing so.

    If it's a fake, it's a good looking one. As said, it needs to be weighed and tested with a magnet. It would be really cool if it's real.

    If it's a struck counterfeit (and there are LOTS of them)
    the weight wouldn't mean anything. Copper Cent planchets
    are very common, and easy to get.

    And the magnet test would just tell you if it's a copper plated
    Steel Cent - it wouldn't determine if it's a struck counterfeit
    on a copper planchet.

    Looks can be deceiving. I wouldn't trust it if it walked in my shop. I would tell the owner to submit it.

    The alloy would be different. For most of 1942 the cent alloy was 95% copper, 5% zinc with a trace of tin. One would expect any leftover 1942 planchets to be the Cu/Zn alloy and not the earlier, 95Cu 3Zn 2Sn version. Also after 1947 the proportion of tin increased to about 1% on average.

    The bright spots in the toning look suspiciously like the Chinese counterfeit finish that has appeared all too often in recent years.
