My piece of ANA: 29-d buffalo

I was a bit surprised I won this for a bit less than max, which always makes you wonder. I belated saw it sold for below trend on HA. Heritage image is a good bit less attractive (as is par for course). I see the obverse seems to have been struck with worn or rusted dies ( which does not bother me), but other aspects of strike, color and eye appeal seem outstanding. Am I missing something else..

I'm guessing the roughness on the obverse, likely caused by the die, as you pointed out, was a turn off for some bidders.
Still a tougher coin that flies under the radar in the series.

What is the grade.....I don't know this series well enough to grade this coin.

ROFL, I consigned that and lost a few bucks. The $13.50 additional has already been spent. Save yours. Thought the strike and color might overcome the roughness. You got a good deal on a pretty nice coin.

I like the coin. 29-D didn't survive as well as some other dates in higher grades. In spite of the rough obverse and lightly struck inside feather, this coin has a full to nearly full top feather - the sign of a decent strike.

The reverse is real nice, with close to a full strike, although the lower central portion of the Buff looks incomplete for some reason.

    It's a keeper.........the Colonel consigned a nice coin.

It's pretty apparent that the depression in later 1929 discouraged hoarders of this date. There weren't a very large number of recent date coins being saved anyway and then a lot of nickels from 1925 to date were just spent for much needed cash.

    The date is much undervalued.

    It's nice for the date.

Nice strike-much better that is often seen. Decent die state, too. Nice example of a tough date!

What do you grade it now that you can examine it in person?

Still a technical 65. Great luster, strike and eye appeal, but roughness of planchet makes it hard to see any higher. Oh, by the way did I say eye appeal is of the charts
