Very, very impressive.... I see some definite separation on some of the letters/numbers... Leads me to believe that is a DDO, and not just machine doubling... Wow.. where did you find this beauty? (please don't say ebay) Cheers, RickO
OK, I just looked at 2 MS 65's that sold on Heritage this year and your coin is much nicer. There was a top pop 66+ that sold on legend last December it's toned nicer but yours has a much better strike. I'll go MS 66 with a shot at 66+.
With all the doubling comments I figured it might be a ddo., I thought that was the reason for the title, but more likely condition census for grade.
I am not aware of a DDO for this date. I'm an old school kinda collector. The only variety that I'm aware of is the 3-1/2 variety but I really don't pay much attention to varieties. I'm mostly impressed with the strike, luster and condition. I've been around for a while and I can't remember seeing such a bold strike for this date. I know they did a better job with this particular date at Denver along with a few other dates but this one here looks special. Bold strike! Full details on both sides of this piece and the condition is also quite impressive. I have no idea where this coin came from or who has cared for it for all these years as it's raw. They're still out there.
I purchased this Buff on line from a B&M. I have no idea how or why he could sell this coin raw, especially for what I paid for it. He needs to pay closer attention to his inventory.
Thank you to all for your input and complements on this piece.
Happy hunting, Joe

I think the DDO is associated with the Philadelphia mint. Here's the CoinFacts description.
Jaime Hernandez:
The 1916 Doubled Die Buffalo nickel is the most popular doubled die variety for the entire Buffalo nickel series.
There are about 200 examples known. Most examples exist in VF grades. There are less than 15 mint state examples known with the highest being two coins in MS64 condition. The doubling is very dramatic mostly going south east of the date and also on the Indian Chiefs lips and chin. This variety is very prominent and it can easily be seen with the naked eye.
Looks like you're having more bad luck on your purchases Joe, but don't worry, thinks will turn around for you one day.
That does not look like a machine double to my old eyes....but what do I know?
That's a beauty as always Joe! (Thumbs up!)
There is no known doubled die for this date and mint. The coin Joe has pictured is a nice example of machine doubling (aka strike doubling aka ejection doubling)-it is not a doubled die.

Very close to a full strike on both obv and rev.

By coincidence I had three 1916 Buffalo nickels pop in grading today, a 1916P that went gem, the others did not make it into the Unc. grades. I have never seen a ddo in hand.
Well..........another weird one..........but in the other direction. Split tail and a full horn. Late die state. Flow marks galore. LIBERTY merging with the rim. Very shallow centers. Looks like wear on Black Diamonds flank, but I think it wasn't brought up properly.
The dies had a heavy clash at some point and were re-worked. Evidence of the heavy clash can be seen on Iron Tail's neck.....that's the hide of the Buffalo showing.
What do I think of it?
I think it's cool and I think it's neat. I think it is mint state. I think it is the product of a planchet that was not fully struck due to the press being cycled down as it was being struck.
What else do I think?
I think I think too much.......................

Thank you my friend. I also have a extremely nice 27-d Buffalo nickel I think you've seen since you sold it to me yes, EXTREMELY nice indeed
That's gonna be a thread all by itself.

Walker Proof Digital Album Fellas, leave the tight pants to the ladies. If I can count the coins in your pockets you better use them to call a tailor. Stay thirsty my friends......
Joe, what an amazing coin. It has all of the charteristics of a PR 1916. I am bothered by the position of the "D" mintmark, though. It is almost tangent to the C (in CENTS) and too much space between the E ((in FIVE). Probably just a reverse die variety, but makes me wonder if some sick doctor added the D to a proof coin.

Thanks again my friend

Joe.............you got the best of both worlds with those two. Of course the Buffalo obverse was totally re-done in 1916. A lot of collectors actually consider 1916 and beyond to be a "Type 3", but the title never stuck.
You can see by the strengthening of the "16" in the date that an attempt was made to try to get the numerals to last longer.
It, of course, was unsuccessful and only partly helped. Now that's why we see all those Buffs with two digit dates.
LIBERTY is much better engraved and bolder, and this improvement did help.
Gotta love those Buffs................but not so much the headaches that come with collecting them.

That begs a GTG thread.
Epic coin!
My YouTube Channel
It's the Chatroom Chimp!
Does that add as much value as with the P mint 1916? I don't see it on the varieties page: http://www.pcgscoinfacts.com/Coin/Detail/3932 Or on the NGC page: https://www.ngccoin.com/coin-varieties/nickels/buffalo-nickels-vscid-4/
I'm not sure what your question is.
GTG? Meaning? Help a board newbie out.

Fabulous coin! I hope it doesn't spoil you because they can't all look this good.

I agree with this.

I have a few. Here's one I fell in love with at first sight. I like buffalo nickels for all sorts of reasons. If ya feel like it, grade this one
Not a very good strike, but has a real neat look. I have no idea what it would grade.
AU range, just a guess.

yes, EXTREMELY nice indeed
That's gonna be a thread all by itself.
I think that '16-D is Mint State, Joe-maybe a 62. Just from worn, eroded and damaged dies.
Here's my favorite '16-D, part of my color coin date set.
Exceedingly hammered Joe. Well done indeed!

OINK
Just. Wow.
Gonna get me a $50 Octagonal someday. Some. Day.
The coin is uncirculated. Ron, you got it at 62, but I think it's a 61. It's got mint luster all over.
Joe.................you know how to pick 'em.
Pete
Could easily be a 61, Pete. No higher than a 62 IMO, tho.
You got it , Pete. It is a weakly struck Buff. It is in fact a 61.
Just may be a new discovery. Ya never know till you send it in.
Thank you bud. It looks special to me in so many ways.
Thanks again my friend
Here is a slab shot of the 61 I was showing and, Pete nailed the grade.
Well done, Pete. You da man!!
