Grits and biscuits with gravy sure sounds good.
What time will you be there? Maybe I will run down to the museum to meet you.

The Smith House is a great place to eat!

Dang! Just noticed they are closed on Mondays.
Monday is the quietest day of the week here. That can be a good thing in the summer where parking can be a challenge. Still plenty of great places to eat will be open.

I went to a weekend historical style fair with exhibits from the gold museum and local panning club members and white lightening distilling before hiking on the A/T. I would see if there is a visitor's center with recommended things to view. Very hilly, there is still gold in those hills but on private property and regulated.
Biscuits and gravy,.... yummy.....
@logger7 ...How are they regulating the gold on private property? Do the feds have mineral rights? Cheers, RickO
Gotta give us a full report!
I was just thinking that potential gold prospectors need to think through all the rules, private property I assume is fair game for the property owners if not commercial. There is probably a lot of gold left.
Good deal. I have some work to do at the museum so I will get down there at 11 am. I have a hike scheduled earlier in the morning so that is the earliest I can be there. If you come between 11 am and noon ask any staff member for John and they will find me. I'll bring along some toys to share. I look forward to meeting you.
When you arrive in town this afternoon you should check out the visitors center on the square. It is staffed between 10 am and 4 pm and the volunteers can let you know what is happening during the week and steer you in the right direction. Being Monday you should easily find a parking on or near the square.
For others planning trips to Dahlonega check out the Chamber's website. Lots of good info. dahlonega.org/
@ricko, mining is not regulated on private property in the sense of mineral rights and ownership. Any gold found is the property owners gold to keep. You can even mine (pan) up here in the National Forest and keep the gold. The regulations deal with environmental concerns. (how much earth is disturbed, how it's disturbed, etc.) But 90% of the local mining goes on under the radar where I suspect rules are followed loosely, if at all. Much of the mining going on in the area is hobby like similar to logger7's experience with panning club members. We have two clubs that I know of that own property on placer creeks and rivers and one organization that owns a lode mine. To the best of my knowledge the only commercial mine still in operation is the Crisson Mine. You can visit but they will not let you near the actual mining operation (open pit). They are a major distributor of personal mining equipment and if you are into that you definitely want to go. Also, if you are into panning gold go to the Crisson. The gold you end up with is genuine Dahlonega Gold. The other places where you can pan are not active mines and they buy their ore on the open market, which means it can come from anywhere.

@JJSingleton .....Thank you for the information. Cheers, RickO
Going to Dahlonega is a great experience, especially with John giving you some personal input. My time there started off an interest in southern gold a decade ago. Hope your wallet fairs better than mine.
