Just took a ....LOSS.... on a key date coin.

PCGS "straight graded" Key date. (but no sticker)

Had a ...."knock"..... post from a poster on another forum. :'(

Lessons learned:
a. Don't post ...upcoming.... auctions on a BST thread.
b. SOME posters on boards will delete an injudicious and uncalled for post.
c. Lack of a sticker ...."MAY" .... turn a coin to dreck.

Consolations:
a. Got the coin in a "trade" that may or may not have mitigated the loss.
b. The "knock" post may have had nothing to do with the hammer price.
c. Thank God my coin money is "playing" money and not significant to my net worth.

FWIW
:/

Forgive me, as I am "Kinda Newish" here (I just figured out that BST means Buy,Sell,Trade).
What the hell is a "knock" post?

EBay? GC? Did the coin fail CAC or did you not send it? Pics?

Maybe the two coins that sold at Heritage Auctions on April 2017, also hurt your coin. One was XF45 grade($2820) the other a AU50 grade ($4583) both sold low.

Quite possibly. I guess it's all guessing at this point.

A knock post is one that is negative towards someone else's stuff. It may or may not have intention to cause harm.

Fictitious example: an 1855 large cent in 65RD is on the market, but someone publicly comments that he thinks the coin is really an RB and thus having a much lower value. That's a knock.

And.... as I stated.... it could have had no effect whatsoever.

It's just something that most people don't do.

Lessons learned... not always cast in stone, but good guidelines. Definitely not nice to 'knock' a running sale.... Cheers, RickO

I will take some much bigger lumps than that on some of the coins I have purchased over the past few years. The market has gone down for some blue chips, like early gold and high grade early type coins, and I will have to pay the piper.

Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

Seriously? You are coming here to whine about $1550 loss on a key date coin? With all the years you have been posting online you are only now learning those lessons? Weren't you a dealer or a pawn shop owner in the past? I can't fathom what this forum would look like if every time someone took a loss on a coin they posted a whining thread.

Oh, and how about a link to the coin so we can see if there is any justification to your whine.

Sorry for your pain; probably there was a more advantageous way or time of year to sell for full value?

So what's the back story to this post?

If you listed it on eBay with no reserve during the summer when most collectors are purely in vacation mode it might have nothing to do with the coin, negative comment, lack of sticker, etc.

Topstuff I am sorry this happened, it isn't fun losing money on anything. You will make it back it another coin, you have some nice stuff.

so, it's ok to knock a coin if someone has completed the sale...not during. in other words, please don't hurt the value of my coin until i have found some sucker to buy it, then you can make fun of it all you want.

You post it publically asking for opinions, you do not get to complain about receiving opinions.

As I said....it was a mistake to post anything PRE sale.

and.... I didn't see any "asking for opinions" in the OP.

    Maybe I missed that. :D:#

    I disagree.

Promotion (BST thread) is always a good business decision.

The coin is what the coin is.

Shoot, plenty of people have had bad things to say about some of my coins. I guess if they ever sell for a loss, I know who's at fault. lol

You make a good point. Let's test it.
You announce a coin for sale and I'll criticize it.

That work good for ya, ya think?

IF I had a nice Proof 63/64 1877 20c piece that I could put up for sale. No matter how much you bad mouth it, Bill Jones will still get out bid.

When I sell off my last few more expensive item, I might test out Bill's theory and ask him to place a nominal bid (e.g. a $1) and see what happens. :)

You say you got it in a trade, so did you actually have that much into the coin or is that a loss in comparison to other completed auctions?
