Do you check for Trueviews on ebay?

lkeigwinlkeigwin Posts: 16,894 ✭✭✭✭✭

This wasn't a crazy cherry. Just a case of mediocre images a seller posted of a coin Phil had Trueview imaged.

I gambled that Phil's pix were more realistic. Here they are...the seller's, Phil's and mine. Phil Arnold nailed it.

Has this happened to you?
Lance.

I like the last 2 pics of course. And I usually check and see if a coin has a TV. Especially if it is in a SP holder.

Can't say as I have. I'm surprised the seller didn't use the TV to advertise the coin. Nice coin though!

Yes, that is how I picked up a 1837 10C No Stars Small Date for my Everyman Collection, not-so-good seller images...but there was a Secure Plus TrueView image which moved my hand to open my wallet a little wider for a "would not have purchased" piece to a "I gotta have that one" piece. Looks like Ramen noodles for a couple of weeks.

Great looking imagery Lance! The coin is not bad either. ;)

It's good to check for TrueViews. Even when the auction includes the TrueView, sometimes it's juiced.

I'm still figuring out how to read this.

Is it that NGC images are small and TrueViews (at max size) are huge?

Or NGC has some color but TrueViews have way more color?

Lance, I prefer your image. The color appears a bit overly saturated, and may have used a warm / and yellow orange filter as well, on image #2.

YES! Always check for TrueView (PCGS) or NGC images. EVERY TIME. Sooooooooooo many times it has influenced my decision to buy/not buy. I consider the TPG images an invaluable resource.

My mistake :# ...I thought that you were saying that you would use NGC images in comparison to TrueViews instead of comparison to sellers bad images. The NGC images are normally terrible, very hot, too much light...at least the ones that I seen.

Nope, I just check to see if there are any images at NGC. Sometimes even a bad pic can tell you something new about a coin. I'd rather check and find it unhelpful than wonder if it would have helped make a better decision. Nothing can compare in quality to a PCGS TV in terms of quality.

I check serial numbers to see primarily if the coin has been at auction and if the auction archives has photos. . TrueView is bonus of course.

if it makes the coin sell, then it is worth it for sure. I like the ability to enhance the image whenever buying a coin. If you cannot get to the surface for a close up you really are taking a risk. Good to know that this service is available. Will surely use it when sending to Grade.

Yes, I check cert#, if TVed, and if beaned, check on CAC as well. Most ebay images are sooooo lousy that I won't take the chance, but if a TV exists, then it helps.

Although the NGC images are inferior, you can play with them in Photoshop to get a decent idea of what the coin really looks like.

Man that seller really did himself a disservice with his pictures.

    Comparing grapes to watermelons:

This is the same coin in both images.

    NGC:

    PCGS:

I would have not been able to sell that coin for $600 using the NGC image.

I got that Lincoln cent from a dealer raw for $20. For some odd reason my PCGS subscription had lapsed. In a hurry to get it slabbed it sent it to NGC. It came back MS67 and that horrible pic I paid for. Later I crossed to PCGS and got the trueview. It was a very wise decision.
