Any members remember what happened here August 1, 2002?

I just looked back in history to page #5370 and the posts made on 8/1/02. Looks like I have a lot of reading/learning to absorb to get to the present: 7/12/17. What a great resource CU is.
Just curious - anyone know who the twenty members (who are still with us) are that have been here the longest?

Lordmarcovan (joined Aug 2001), keets (Mar 2002) and Lanlord (May 2002) were on that last page, and still around, although there are posts on page 5370 from July 31 2002.

I'm afraid that predates my participation on the forum. I have been here a while, but I joined in early 2005.
2005 here as well. Don't forget ricko, as I believe he was here when they made the transition.
August 1, 2002? I have no idea what we were writing about back then, but can give you a pretty good start to the list of twenty members.

Wow. @lordmarcovan has been here since pre-9/11!
What's the transition? Pre-8/1/02 when forum updated and all the old stuff gone?
One of the nice things about the old forum software is each of us was assigned a MemberID, and you could see who the old-timers were. I'm a noob...December 2009.
I've been lurking since 2005.....didn't join, until 2011. Wish that I had joined sooner.

I joined this forum on August 1st, 2002 @ 0800. Click on my icon and you can see the date.
Really interesting that you chose this date. WOW
Later, Paul.
3-19-02 for me, according to my profile. Don't recall the date myself.....

That's odd, I can only review my old posts back to December 2001. Posts earlier than that seem to be gone, probably lost in the conversion to the new software. My join date is February 23, 2001 (that was Opening Day after the conversion before this one and everyone had to re-register). That lazy ricko couldn't be bothered to join until the next day.
Fun fact: if you want to see what member "number" you are, go to your profile (or anyone's profile), hover your mouse over either "Discussions" or "Comments" on the right side of the page, and see what number is in the URL just before the username. Ricko is #125.
New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.
I sent in my first submissions in 2003, but didn't join the boards until 2006.

A lot of us were here pre 9/11. I found out about 9/11 on these forums. I always checked when I got up, and that morning I read about it here before hearing about it anyplace else. A definite life changing moment.
February 23, 2001..And running out of time.:).Although I have dyslexia and
posting is extremely hard, I still enjoy reading the posts. Not being able to
contribute to the boards is a problem.
April of '03 for me. The days of wine and roses, when darn near every post was either informative or started great discussions.

Replace the first one with the next sequential number. Have fun.
And if you want to inspect any particular users' number click on their name and then hover over the 'discussions', or 'comments' links and that URL will contain the user number in the format above, but with the username replacing the second one.

Folks should keep in mind that we had an older board to post on that did not have its posts or messages archived and transferred when the first version of this board was put online in February, 2001. We had to re-register in late February, 2001 and our post counts returned to zero and our join date became our re-registration date. So, while it may seem that no one here was active and registered on these boards prior to February, 2001 the fact is that many of us were posting on the precursor PCGS boards in the 1990s.

TomB, I was going to ask your real ID in a PM as I enjoy your posts. Dah, (face palm).
I was a lurker briefly on the old (pre-February, 2001) boards but don't recall whether I was registered or not. I do remember 9/11 on the forums, and somebody dug up some of those archived threads a few years ago.
I am a very different numismatist than I was in 2001-02, and I owe most of that to the collected wisdom of the people who have posted here over the years.
On a more personal note, I pause here to salute the memory of Carl (CarlWohlforth), Wayne (Newbiecollector), Chad (silvereagles92), Brad (tbirde56), Cameron (kieferscoins), and Russ (Russ), to name just a few of our fellowship who are no longer with us.
September 2004 for me. I think I was using "other" message boards before then, including alt.rec.coincollecting (or some such). Then there were a couple of feuding "online coin clubs", where all of the moderators eventually turned into little dictators.
"Those PCGS" boards were for people who actually owned certified coins, I said to myself.
The Kool-Aid finally found me....
November 25th 2001 @ 10:35PM for me.
For some reason I did not join the coin boards til the late 2000s. My handwriting is definitely suffering, not sure what others do about that. I feel sorry for the order entry people who have to decipher poor writing.

was invited by goose, I saw where he had a 56 flying eagle cent (pcgs vf-25) for sale, and invited me to this forum, mainly to look at closer photo's he had on here. been here ever since. That coin is long gone as well , was upgrade to a xf, and then on to a Mint state coin.
June 2002... I suspect I managed to do something wrong in the first 100 days...
Experience the World through Numismatics...it's more than you can imagine.
PCGS announced they would NEVER graded a Lincoln cent above MS 66...Or a Brown Lincoln higher than MS 65. Those were the rules then...

You can find the exact date you joined on your activity page. January 2002....hard to believe there were 4,677 others before me. Likely would have joined earlier but didn't even own a home computer until Jan 2002.
October 15, 2001 is when I started and like Fairlaneman I was on the Registry forum then.
Back in those days Friday was RED day.....when sets were updated with new entry's once a week!
June 17 2002 and I lurked for a while before I joined. I pretty much walked away from coins for about 7 years after the housing crash and a divorce.
I've been slowly getting back into things over the last 2 years or so.
I cannot remember what I had for lunch, much less what happened almost 15 years ago!

And, @lordmarcovan , yes we have lost a lot of friends and fellow collectors. I truly miss IGWT. Bear is also missed.
Compared to you guys, I'm a total newbie.....March - 2006 for me. I still learn something new every day I come here, too. Maybe this is why I read 100 posts for every one I make
I came over from the old board Feb. 24 2001. I'm member 123.
I think all of the old board is lost. It also looks like a lot of the early threads are missing from this board.
I think I started on the old PCGS boards in 1999. They made the change-over to this one I think in 2001,and I came over on February 24, 2001.
It's good to see so many of the "founders" and veterans of the old boards still here, and sad to remember those many who have since passed away.
I certainly get the tedium PCGS felt about monitoring the occasional chaos of the Open Forum while they had it, but that's where members who had forged friendships and animosities went to play. Some remarkable (as well as juvenile) stuff went on there, and I do miss that rich camaraderie.
I've never lost appreciation for our hosts and what they still offer, though., This place remains a great source of knowledge and insight for me about matters numismatic.
Here's a warning parable for coin collectors...
Oh, yes. Most definitely. Good old Bear. IGWT seemed a nice chap - we exchanged a few PMs - but I didn't know him as well as many of you did.
Speaking of old PMs, how does one search up the archived ones now? I had over 50K+ worth of PMs in my history (and that's after I cleaned them all out around 2003 or so). I have no idea how to find that stuff now, if it even still exists.
I had nearly 60K posts before the latest transition, too. The changeover lopped off at least 15K from my post count. Not that that matters as much as the old PMs, which were my "memory" of transactions and friendships past.
On the old FuseTalk site, the "Today" page used to have the Top Ten users by post count. I was at #7 when last I looked. And many of the ones above me were either inactive or even deceased. You can tell us oldtimers with the lofty post counts were around during the old Open Forum days, for sure.
I originally joined prior to the first major change from Fusetalk... I believe 1999, could have been early 2000. Then, the forum software changed in Feb. 2001... we lost ALL post counts and had to re-register. As noted above, there are still members here from that time. This software change, we lost the old OF post counts but retained the coin forum post counts. LordM was up around 54K at that time. The top ten poster list contained several that no longer posted or were deceased. As to the question posed by the OP... no, I do not remember what happened on that day....I was working at that time and there were always major issues to be dealt with. I really enjoy this forum and have learned a great deal. Also acquired many nice coins through this venue. Hope to be around for many more years.... Cheers, RickO
We had some great times on the old board. There was always something crazy going on.
